it doesn't tell you how to create mockups, just how to adjust printers for America size business cards.

These are rarely done with a bitmap editor such as Gimp. A vector graphics editor (like inkscape) is more appropriate or even a typesetting application (Scribus).

But why would you need a template for what is essentially two lines of text on a background?

RE: how to create mockups for business cards ?
I think you will be hard pressed to find mock-up templates as shown in Gimp format.
If it is just designing a biz card or even a brochure / pamphlet see above.

For a mock-up, there are plenty for Ad*be PS, most of them pay-for but some free.

and

Gimp will open these (usually) .psd files but PS layer effects are not supported.
Still worth a try just to see how it is set-up

Even using PS there is a lot of art-work required for any of these layers.
Not for a novice. Get to know how Gimp works first.

The picture above is really done with sample printouts taken with a camera: the lack of depth of field is visible on the right edge of the cards, not to mention the pen in the background. There is also some post-processing smudging of the desk surface.

Hmmm... actually the picture at http://www.gulfup.com/?TO6w3g still has its EXIF data:
Code:

Camera Model: DSLR-A550

Aperture: f/4.0
Exposure Time: 0.050 s (1/20)
ISO equiv: 1600
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: program (Auto)
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No (enforced)
Orientation: Normal
Color Space: sRGB
GPS Coordinate: undefined, undefined
