How to convert negative as postive
Hi all,

OS - Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64bit

I'm a beginner in photo editing.

I have negative scanned and have no way converting it to postive. I found following video;
How to convert color negatives with GIMP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ifwz7vxm4Mc

The fonts on menu and drop-menu are too small for me to read.

On my GIMP version
-> Colors -> Value Invert
no further selection there.

Please help. Thanks

Regards
satimis

I performed 2 tests;

1)
Running VueScan
http://www.hamrick.com/

2)
Using a digital camera scanning it

Hi,

Now I got it after contacting the developer.

What about the negative taken with digital camera? Can I convert it to positive on GIMP? If YES please give me some hint how to do it. Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for your advice. Please explained in detail. With VueScan I just select;
"Input | Media” to “Color negative”

Then the output of the image will be positive. But with camera there is no such setting provided.

Quote:for a quick job, Colors>Invert and then some color correction, Auto white balance or else. But to do it really properly you would have to know exactly how to invert the colors, there is a Curves setting for each type of film (assuming you camera didn't screw up the color balance...).
Yes, I tried nearly an hour and could not get the same result as with VueScan. I did graphic editing about 10 years before running PhotoShop then GIMP. Now I will come back trying more on GIMP to refresh my memory.

The reason why I'm interested in taking the negative with camera is trying to inject the money for buying a new scanner to buy a quality camera, if succesful. Because after scanning all old negatives the new scanner will retire. I won't use it anymore. My old Epson scanner is still working. But I'm not well satisfied with the quality of the scanned images of negatives. Photo scanning is still good.

Thanks
