how to build map of Death Valley
Hi all,

I'm new here, and fairly new to Gimp. Well, I can do a few basics but still a beginner.

I'm in need of a map of Death Valley. Is there any way to build such a thing on Gimp (for a beginner)?

Thanks,
Cloud

welcome to the forum, im new here too, you can do so much with gimp, a map would be pretty easy in my opinion, what exactly do you want to do...just a basic map? i would suggest at least trying...and then when you come across a specific problem youre having then come hit up the forum, its definitely possible, even for a beginner. good luck!

Thanks!

Is there a map-making tool or something?

Alternatively, I've downloaded a Death Valley map into Gimp. I'd like to delete some of the text, and add my own. Any ideas how to do this?

Appreciate the help.

RE: how to build map of Death Valley
there is a render that does do land and water, i havent played with it too much, sooo im not exactly sure all the different ways you can manipulate it. with taking text out it can be as simple as selecting the text with the color picker and then 'delete', smudging over it, and then select and cover or smear over or when you delete the text you could copy map image and drag the bottom over to fill the text space that was deleted. thats how i would do it at least...im sure someone on here has a more professional way of going about it. good luck, hope any of this helps.

oh to try to screw with the map you go to

file>create>patterns>render map
i clicked detail in the middle, this is what ive got, you can play with it till ya get what ya want, and then colorize it to the colors you want after the fact, i used previous settings for this...- the detail in the middle.

Very helpful, very cool. Thanks so much, missmacabresass!

I'm going to use your tips to take a stab at it later today. Will post back here to let you know how worked. Or, didn't. Wink

RE: how to build map of Death Valley
Well, I tried using the render map. Got the map up, but then wasn't sure what to do next. I have a simple Death Valley map that I want to modify (delete some text, add new text). So, how do I get my DV map into the render screen?

Also, found the color picker and dialog box, but when I selected the text to delete/smudge, nothing happened.

I may just be too inexperienced to modify this map.

But thanks for your attempts to help!

RE: how to build map of Death Valley
thats your problem, you just think your "too inexperienced". if i can do it, then you can. If you have the rendered one you want and you like it, then you could put your other map on top of it and then lower the opacity to use to trace just what you want, or even screen it...or over lay (when your on the layer dialogue box go up and layer mode is what you want to mess around with). you could even...i think...put a layer mask on the already made map and take away the text and then screen or overlay it...

and if you do just want to take away the text if when you use the color picker make sure you are on that layer and not a new one, and that all dialogue boxes are closed, if that doesnt work im not so sure why it wouldnt be, but you could just erase it with the eraser, and then add your text.

maybe if you could upload a link to the page i can screw around with it and see what worked for me...
