How to apply Lighting Effects for entire image
Here with this thread, is an image that I am creating and I have a question about how to make some modifications to it.
Allow me to provide the steps I used to get this effect.

Go to the Foreground & background color box in GIMP'S Toolbox and choose 505050 for the color of the background.
Create a new project with the dimensions of 700 x 200.
Paint your selection using the RGB color of 828282.
Now, go to GIMP's menu and select Layer > Layer to Image Size.
Right click the text layer and choose Alpha to Selection.
Click on the Open the channels dialogue book icon in the Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo dialogue.
Click on the Create a new channel icon approximately midway down the Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo dialogue.
In the New Channel dialogue, choose Depth for Channel name, click the Initialize from selection check box and click OK.
Go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur and select 8px and then click OK. Repeat 3 more times with 5px, 3px and 1px each time for subsequent settings.
Turn off visibility for the channel Depth.
Go back to the layers dialogue and click to select the text layer.
Now, go to Filters > Light and Shadow > Lighting Effects.
Select the tab Bumpmap.
Click the check box Enable bump mapping.
In the Bumpmap image drop down menu, select the channel Depth and then choose 0.04 under Maximum height.
Now, switch to the Material tab and use these settings. You may experiment with different settings here if you like. This
is just as a general guideline.

Glowing: 0.60
Bright: 0.15
Shiny: 1.00
Polished: 27

Click on the Light tab and use these settings for each and then click OK.

LIGHT 1

Type: Directional
Color: #ffffff
Direction: X: 0, Y: -1, Z: 0.5 (or 1)
Intensity: 1

So, my question is: how can I apply this effect around the ENTIRE image/selection instead of just in that one area in the upper left hand corner? Btw... this image is suppose to be a control knob for a TV - project I'm working on, so, it needs a little bit of a metallic chrome look.

I have attached a screenshot of the image.

I sort of followed the description for the first paragraph then lost the thread, that's what happens the older you get.

Tried to recreate the image, guessing at sizes. Difficult to see from your screenshot, with out the layer dialog.

This is my starting shot. [Image: lCjImhb.jpg]

First guess, Maybe you are trying to apply lighting effects to the whole image, try just the center box.

Make a new layer from visible excluding the background.

FWIW attached my amateur image

More metallic, not the best of gray for tweaking the colour curve, I find a gray with a tinge of blue works best.

RE: How to apply Lighting Effects for entire image
he wants to apply a lighting effect to the whole image, i think

my advice would be to simply bumpmap the knob and use a metallic gradient for the background

So I'll try the "New from Visible" and see how that goes. Thanks for the replies!
