RE: How do I stretch a image?
Click on owl layer in the layers window to make it the active layer. (it will be highlighted in the layers window)

- with Scale scale tool, click on the owl on canvas (the workspace)
Click the eye off the owl layer the layers window so you can see the size of the owl while sizing. Turn the eye back on when done.

-last, uncheck the chain link icon in the scale layer dialog, next the to the sizes to unlock the proportions. Then you can stretch the top or bottom.
7.52.2. Description of the “Scale Layer” Dialog
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-layer-scale.html

If you mean stretch as enlarge, then leave the chain link on, then change the value of one of the numbers (Height or Width) then push enter to preview & click ok.

Is the size of the original owl really small(icon size)? If so when you scale up click in the tool options "Interpolation: linear, or none" for a sharper enlargement, if it ends up getting too pix-elated/, you can try the other interpolations
then "Filters > Enhance > unsharp mask" to make it crisper/clearer.

OMG! Thanks! Now how do I lighten or fade the owl image to use it as a background pic?

^_^ , for a washed out look

Colors > Brightness-Contrast

Then pull the "contrast" slider to the left some & raise the brightness slider to the right some.

Also try changing the opacity (transparency) of the layer
Click the slider under the layer mode in the layer window, near the top.

I'm signing out for the night, might be back, but if you need anymore help, I'll reply back asap or someone else will.

The problem with contrast is that is tends to make everything gray (0 contrast is an image filled with Gray 50%).

Two rather equivalent techniques:
- Add a layer below it with the color of the background you want, and reduce the opacity of the owl layer using the "opacity" slider at the top of the Layers list.
- Start the Curves tool click the line at 0,0 and move it up to 0,180

Both solutions will give a slightly better result i you increase the contrast first.

Contrast +20, opacity 10% on white:
