How do I select a complex collection of pixels?

How do I select a complex collection of pixels?
I'm using the free select, but it is lightning up the areas around the thing because there's a white background. What should I do?

A picture attached is worth a thousand words... (Hint: Attach an image showing what you are trying to do)
But if you are trying to isolate part of an image that is on a background color, try reading this thread. It may give you some techniques that may be useful with your current question.
