How do I remove a background?
So I've looked at tons of videos on this and I've done exactly what they've said and it's not working for me. I'm probably doing something wrong but I can't figure out what. Here's what I've been doing:

First I open the layers toolbox, select the picture, and add an alpha channel.

Then I use the paths tool and use that to go around the part of the image I want to cut out.

When I'm done with that I right click inside of the area I used the paths tool on and go to "Select" and then "From Path".

Next, to invert it, I go on my keyboard and hit control and then "i".

After all that, I hit delete. I was told that after hitting the delete button the background should disappear and I should be left with the part that I used the paths tool on, but nothing even happens.

Help!

RE: How do I remove a background?
it sounds like you are on the right track, except for the bit where you click inside the path
that just creates another node
what you want is a closed path

so you draw your path with the paths tool
to make sure the path is closed (this is the important step), you have to connect the first and the last node
you do that by holding down CTRL (note how the mousepointer is transformed from a plus into two interconnected circles) and clicking on the first node

then you call up a selection from your path (the marching ants appear), invert, make sure the layer you want to remove the background from is active (selected) and hit delete

that should do the trick

RE: How do I remove a background?
I followed the steps that Esper wrote, but it still is not working for me. I'm not sure why, I did see the marching ants after closing the path and hitting "From Path" and it seemed like all was well with what I was doing, but when I hit delete, nothing happened.

RE: How do I remove a background?
I attached a 200x200 image that I just now tried this with. That is what it looked like after I pressed delete. It didn't change at all from the original image and still appears exactly the same.

RE: How do I remove a background?
Yeah I guess I could do that. It will probably end up looking different than what I wanted, but if that's what I have to do then I'll do it.

RE: How do I remove a background?
the only other way i can reproduce your problem is when the pixel lock is checked, thats why i was asking if you can use the eraser tool

on top of your layers there are two little checkboxes

the little brush is for locking pixels
and the little grey checkerboard for locking the alpha channel

RE: How do I remove a background?
The pixel lock was not checked. Hopefully this isn't a stupid question, but how do I tell if the layer is active or not? I think it is, but I'm not sure how to tell.

RE: How do I remove a background?
in your layers tab each layer has a border

when the border is active (selected), the border is white

when its not selected, its black

also, when you select a layer in the layers-tab, the whole row will be highlighted with blue

RE: How do I remove a background?
general comment:

The selection is a bit weird, it does not follow the path.

I was just using this picture as a quick example, not really trying to use the face for anything besides a test to see if it worked. Does it not work if the path is a little odd like that?

It seems that the layer is selected. It's white.

RE: How do I remove a background?
im out of options here

so when you call up the selection from the path, invert it, and then erase with the eraser tool,
do you get rid of the background ?
does the grey checkerboard appear where you erase ?

RE: How do I remove a background?
Yes, when I do that the background does disappear and the checkerboard replaces it.

RE: How do I remove a background?
I guess I could just do it that way, since that seems to work. Not sure why the other way doesn't work, though.

RE: How do I remove a background?
Looks like that was the problem. I was hitting backspace and not delete. For me, clear is also "delete" not "backspace" which I was hitting instead of the actual delete button. Wow, sorry about that. I had no idea the problem was something like that!

Thanks so much for helping me with this!
