How do I get this metal-like effect on texts
A consistent feature of the texts here is the metal look. How do I do that in GIMP? I have Googled for some tutorials for metal metal effects but none of them seems to address this type of metal texture.

RE: How do I get this metal-like effect on texts
Not the best of example (it was quick) but the general procedure is there. The best way is fire Gimp up and experiment.

The procedure is often
Make your text, a nice "fat" font is best.
1. From the text make a selection and fill with colour Some colours work better than others. A light gray for chrome.
2. Add some noise, again experiment, Start with hurl but try the others.
3. Give this a motion blur for that scratched effect.
4. Now you can lose that selection and apply a bumpmap. Again several settings for this. You can bumpmap it on itself or use a blurred copy of the original text.
5. Final procedure is often A zig-zag color curve to give a bit of metallic look or the use the Gimp lighting effects plugin.

A place to start is this
have a look look through some of the older posts and follow the links.

RE: How do I get this metal-like effect on texts
Hi, im the owner of gimp-science-labs.
I usually post on gimpchat under the same name, but i saw a link from my blog to this thread, so i registered to say hello Smile.

thank you for repping my blog - i appreciate it a lot !

to answer hakunamatata's question:

there are loads of techniques to do metal text
judging from the image you posted, my advice would be to give your text a small bevel and fill it with a metallic texture or pattern

there are websites on the internet where you can download high resolution textures for free
sometimes you can find patterns for photoshop and convert them to a Gimp .pat file

if all these options are unavailable you can motion blur noise, so it will look like brushed aluminium

Draconian on gimpchat has a series of tutorials going on, called metal wurx
one of them describes said technique to get brushed aluminium

another option is to use a gradient and apply so called chrome curves to it

i use to recommend monsoonami's chrome tutorial on youtube, because i think its the best i've ever seen:

based on this tutorial i developed the whole chrome-curves technique even further - you can find posts about it on my blog

hope that helps ! Smile
