Sad How do I Copy and Paste in GIMP (I can't get “unstuck”)
...well this is embarrassing. Blush

I've followed the unstuck guide which hasn't helped: http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-getting-unstuck.html

NOTE:The file I'm working on was imported from a PSD, then saved as XCF.

I perform the following:

select all
select none
ensure I'm on correct layer:
(select Move/pick a layer - show current layer) Click the layer that was highlighted.
click Rectangle selection tool
settings mode:replace the current selection
draw rectangle around section of image
copy selection - ctrl + C
status bar:"copied pixels to the clipboard"
create new image
paste - ctrl + V
floating selection appears
anchor to layer - Ctrl+H
a blank white square is pasted to the new image instead of what I copied.

Am I in some weird mode?
If I start a new image, draw with the paintbrush, I can copy/paste selections as expected.

Also, after copying, if I paste as new image (Ctrl+Shift+V), I get the same blank white square.

Using GIMP 2.8.2 Windows 8.1

I can not reproduce the problem. Is your image indexed? ( can you get an indexed PSD? ) If it is try changing the mode to RGB
Image -> Mode -> RGB

Otherwise can you post your original PSD somewhere for comments.

The Image mode is already RGB.

RE: How do I Copy and Paste in GIMP (I can't get “unstuck”)
I just realised that this problem is only happening on 1 layer. The layer has 100% opacity, however I noticed that this layer's preview image icon contains 2 images side by side. The first is the actual image, and the second is mostly white with a black border. If I copy the entire layer to a new image, I get the second image - which explains why I was getting mostly white images being pasted.

[SOLVED]
Ahhhhh....I can click on the two layer preview icons separately. Clicking each gives it a white border around it. Selecting the left layer icon gives the image a yellow and black dashed border around a section of the image. Selecting the right layer icon gives the image a green and black dashed border around a section of the image.

Could someone please explain the 2 icons on the layer, and the green-black/yellow-black dashed line?

Quote:.. Clicking each gives it a white border around it..

That is a layer mask see
http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-dialogs...layer-mask

Click in the icon in the layers dialog to switch between layer and layer mask. The active one has a white border.

Just means that your layer is smaller than the canvas and the dashed line is the extent. The colour changes depending which is active, the layer or the layer mask.

RE: How do I Copy and Paste in GIMP (I can't get “unstuck”)
Yes, terribly annoying when you have for instance a Channel selected and GIMP always automatically selects the channel if you save a selection to a channel, when it is never what I want. Also seems completely insensible. I make that 'mistake' (it's GIMP that makes the mistake) every single time I create a channel from a selection. Then I get frustrated because nothing seems to work anymore. And then I realize that it hasn't been selecting my layer anymore
:(((((((.

Stupid program.

You use a layer mask (I think, always) to manipulate the alpha channel of the layer. Once you are satisfied and want to apply it, you can select Apply Mask and it gets integrated with the layer proper. The idea of a layer mask is that you can just paint it with grayscales (or anything, really) and white means fully opaque, and black means fully transparent.

So you can easily create alpha-channel-gradients in this way, and other stuff. I saw some tutorial on how to selectively apply desaturation to an image using a mask or something, I think it was part of the help documentation. That was pretty cool, to selectively let colours shine through, but I don't remember how to do it.
