How do I cancel a GIMP function?

After using GIMP a little for a couple years, I still have not realized how to cancel a function.

Example: I started a lasso or scissors select tool but decide after I activated them that I want to do something else. How do I cancel the function after I started it? Also, if I have scissors select with some points already established, is there a way to cancel or undo the points of the select one at a time?

Pardon my newbie questions. Please correct me, including on technical terminology.

RE: How do I cancel a GIMP function?
Escape will cancel most selection tools.

Can't tell for the scissors points, and didn't find anything in the doc. On the other hand you can move them around, so having too many points should not be a problem.
