How do GIMP filters compare with Photoshop?
Hi

I mostly work in oils but produce some digital work as prints, either digital sketches / paintings or tweaked photos of my work in oils. Until now I've been using photoshop but I'm considering the switch to Gimp. My main concern is the effectiveness (and range) of the filters. If you have experience of photoshop filters can you tell me if GIMP is comparable?

I mostly use 'paint daubs', 'palette knife' & 'watercolour' in the art filters, then tweak / edit with 'fade' and 'mode' functions (colour / linear burn, vivid light, exclusion etc). Some of the other filters I use are the 'accented edges' and 'ink outlines' in the brush stroke filters, 'cutout', 'dry brush', and other comic style sketch effects.

I need any finish to be fine art print compatible / quality and don't have the competence to deal with software crashes - yet!

Thanks.

Sarah

Way too many filters in Gimp to comment on. The big advantage of Gimp and its filters and plugins is that they are essentially free so you can try them. If you're looking for Gimp extensions check http://registry.gimp.org.

If you are much into color effects I suggest you start with GMIC which is a very complete set of filters.

Thanks for responding. Looks like I need to download and just try it out. Thanks for the links.
