How can I make my working area larger?

Ok, so I am trying to make these two pics one, but as you can see from the desktop screen shot, the working area is that gray rectangle, outside it cuts the images off. How do I fit both in to save my work. That is all it needed, is put the one on the left to the one on the right and save and print it, but it is cutting the rest off.

Thanks for the help.

As long as you save as XCF, the "hidden bits" are kept, the image is cropped to the canvas when you export to GIF/PNG/JPG.

I will look into that. I did finish it in Libre Office Writer, took me all of two min to do what I needed to do, but thank you for your reply.

Yes, I tried the Canvas size option and it worked perfect. Exactly what I needed, as I said I did do it in Libreoffice Writer, but will now know for future projects.
