How can I get this effect?
Hi, I'm really new to this, could anybody help me get the effect on this picture: http://www.andyfilm.com/ironside07.jpg

I just want to emulate the red/black effect but can't work out which filters/effects to use

RE: How can I get this effect?
several ways to do this

I would say

1. If the image is greyscale check in menu 'Image' -> 'Mode' and set to RGB
1a If the image is colour then go to the 'Colors' menu and choose 'desaturate'.

2. In the 'colors' menu choose 'levels' and in the graph move the sliders towards the center until you get a suitable 'contrasty' image.

3. Back to the 'colors' menu, choose 'colorify', select red if you need to (it should be the default)

some screenshots that might help. http://i.imgur.com/GJYiq.jpg
