Highlight Text / Make it Glow (Basic)
This seems like a simple task, but I've had trouble matching up with it well. I have graphics of some book pages, and would like to make them glow/radiate very similar to this video from a Star Wars documentary:

The main issue so far is just making it really look like it's glowing, rather than just everything getting brighter. I tried Filters > Aristic > Softglow, but that didn't work too well.

Anybody suggest good processes for this? Thanks in advance.

A trick I use is to reduce the contrast on the rest of the document:

- select the text (round rectangle below)
- feather the selection some amount (20px below)
- invert selection
- using brightness/contrast reduce the contrast in the rest of the document.

I can see what you mean about the glow & I was going to post this but, then not as it is not quite right, but in the end why-not

Lots of ways, here is my shot, just for the 'glow'. Don't know if it is any better than your attempt.

Text over a new layer & working on that layer
Fill the layer with the light colour
Make an irregular selection, I used the rectangular selection tool in addition mode
Give the selection a suitable amount of blur
Invert the selection
Fill the selection with the darker colour.
Remove the selection

RE: Highlight Text / Make it Glow (Basic)
Thanks, guys. I didn't want to simply dim the other part of the page for several reasons (including the fact that there will be preceding pages which were not highlighted at all, and so I wanted there to be consistency). However, in the end, I believe that's the only way.

So two things were done two achieve this effect:

1) Dim the surrounding area just so that it appears brighter in comparison, and
2) I also went to Colors > Levels and played with those, and that did help brighten it up and make it look a bit better, too.

But I now think that dimming the surrounding area is probably the only solid way to achieve this. One other note: I just checked the History Channel documentary (Star Wars The Legacy Revealed) and I noticed that, actually, the just dim the surrounding area, too!
