Hi! and pls help with some annoyances
Hi everyone!

i've been using Gimp since mid 90's and always loved it.

I used photoshop since version 3 on a sgi Irix and was extremely happy with the several window scheme of gimp. also got really excited when i discovered scripting support.

now, i've been away from gimp and image editing for the last 2 or 3 years... today i just installed it on my debian sid... must say i hate the auto import/export thing

openning a png or jpg, doing something minor like cropping and saving.
instead of:
(ctrl+q, click Yes when asked if want to save. | ctrl+s) click OK on the next jpeg/png options window. Done.
now its:
ctrl+s, remember it's not ctrl+s, esc, ctrl+shit+e, enter, overwrite? enter. click OK on the next jpeg/png options window. ctrl+q, "do not save"

Also something that may be a gnome/gtk issue. but i'm missing detacheable menus. can't find anything in preferences or gnome advanced settings tweak thingy.

that was a grumpy hello... sorry about that. but since i'm rambling about the annoyances, another more:

- why when selecting "resize window when changing zoom" it will stop short after using 5/8 of the screen?

- because of the above, any way to open every image maximized?

RE: Hi! and pls help with some annoyances
1) plenty of people hate the new save/export. But plenty of people have been bitten by the previous bevahior (if you save a complex image in a flat format, you can quit Gimp without saving all your layers/selections/path....). It's a bit as if word/excel let you leave the app without saving because you printed a PDF... If you only use Gimp for cropping and minor editing, you can use some simpler software (or stick to 2.6).

2) the right click menu over the image is detachable in 2.6 (and so are its submenus)

agree. it's more consistent... but an alert with the usual "never bug me again" would have solved but cases in my *uninformed* opinion Smile

Thanks! haven't noticed that. i use the keyboard acelerators for menu all the time, so never right clicked the image.

another weird thing.

if you edit one image and cltr+w it, the exit without saving is on the left. if you ctrl+q it, the exit without saving is on the right.

and now just noticed another one... if you ctrl+e the image twice, it does not show you the format options again! that's is really nice if you are cropping it.

but if you are changing image indexing and trying export with several compression levels...

i think this falls in the same reasoning you pointed out for 1 above

it should either always show the image format options, or do not show the first time to at least same me some trouble when i'm just cropping Big Grin

Highly dangerous... First-time users are the typical jpeg-to-jpeg editors, so they would tick that... and when they get proficient enough to start saving as XCF, this flag would still be there... they shoot themselves in the foot, through a time portal Smile

G'day,

I've also used Gimp for years and promoted it whenever I could.
80% of the time it is just for cropping & resizing photos for the web, so 2.8 is a pain.

It doesn't seem as if you are out to win friends

I owe the truth to my friends. And I do most of my photo processing with Digikam anyway.
