Help with the windows in the newest version of GIMP for OSX
Hi; I've used GIMP for a long time now, so long that the version I just downloaded to use on my new laptop is pretty different from the old version I used to use; the version I used to use was the build that required it run X11 whenever it ran GIMP. I'm having a problem with the new version though; every time I take an action that opens a window (like Scale Image, Resize Canvas, etc.), the windows never stay where I left them, instead always opening at the upper left corner of the screen. I tend to use these a lot so it really breaks my flow. I tried dragging them to the center and then "save window position" in Preferences, and that doesn't even seem to do anything. Can anyone help?

PS: Probably should have mentioned, I'm using OSX. Also, I'm pretty sure I have the newest version of GIMP (I downloaded it yesterday)

What version of gimp do you have? the latest for the wndoze flavor is 2.8.6

When the tool windows appear in the upper left, is the whole window visible?
If so, then this is just a minor bug in osx and really isn't much of a problem.
Can you attach a screenshot of what your seeing?

If you have to drag it into view on the screen, then more research will be needed.

I've seen that resetting the gimp profile to work, maybe try that.

RE: Help with the windows in the newest version of GIMP for OSX
Very probably the Mac OS is over-riding the Gimp defaults, I can do this in linux KDE and force window position & size.
but
Will you check in your local ./gimp-2.8 folder in the file named sessionrc and see if the dialog window positions are being saved when you click on "edit" -> "preferences" -> "window management" -> "save window positions now" Of course, have the relevant window/dialog open and in position when you do this.

This is the end of the sessionrc file here. As a starting point see if you have something similar. It could be that the Mac OS prevents writing to this file.
Code:
........
(session-info "toplevel"
    (factory-entry "gimp-file-open-dialog")
    (position 300 200)
    (size 1010 665))
(session-info "toplevel"
    (factory-entry "gimp-rotate-tool-dialog")
    (position 380 220))
(session-info "toplevel"
    (factory-entry "gimp-scale-tool-dialog")
    (position 380 220))

(hide-docks no)
(single-window-mode yes)
(last-tip-shown 0)

# end of sessionrc

In this example you can see the rotate tool opens with top left corner at 380 220.

I have to say that even without these settings, the tools are well behaved here and it is only the 'open file' dialog which starts in the corner of the screen without 'fixing' it in sessionrc.

I don't know how to find that file; how exactly do I find "local ./gimp-2.8"?

Here is a screen shot of what I mean; I added an arrow specifically to the type of window specified.

Hi, just quickly browsing the site and want to pop in to help.

For a temporary(nice imo) workaround, drag your toolbox window down some so all you need to do is click the tool windows' (scale, etc...) title bars to bring it to the front.

To elaborate on riche's post:
You'll find your local folder here, replace "username" with what you named your computer. For windoze, its in:

C:\Users\username\.gimp-2.8\ the "sessionirc" file is in here
(so if you can't find it in the above path search for the folder " .gimp-2.8")

Thats all from me for now, see you on the weekend Smile
