help resizing for the web
Hi I need to resize images for the web. They need to be 100 pix x 80 pix when I use the scale image tool I can only change one value otherwise it distorts the image I have tried cropping it as well but with no luck in getting it right, how do I get my pics the right size?! Thanks

RE: help resizing for the web
If the aspect ratio of your original image isn't 100:80 (for instance 300:240) you will have to scale and crop, or scale and enlarge artificially.

To scale and crop:

- in the Scale image dialog, enter the requested width or height value that insures that the other value is at least as big as requested
- Scale the image
- Once scaled crop to final size

To scale and enlarge (this is easy with a uniform background):
- in the Scale image dialog, enter the requested width or height value that insures that the other value is at most as big as requested
- scale the image
- Use Image/Canvas size, and the change the canvas size to the request size (100x80), after unchaining the width/height fields. Depress the "Center" button before the "Resize" one. Your image will have two checkerboard borders.
- Set the "background color" of the paint tools to the background color of your image
- Layer/New layer and fill type="background color", your image turns into a uniform rectangle with the background color. Don't panic.
- Layer/Stack/Lower layer you original image reappears.
- Save the result.

On the whole, when you do an image for anything that will require a fixed size, it's always a good idea to start with an image that has the required aspect ratio...

RE: help resizing for the web
There is a third option. There is a plugin called Liquid Rescale that uses a technique known as seam carving to alter an images aspect ratio without distorting it. You can find the plugin at http://liquidrescale.wikidot.com. They also have videos explaining how it works and tutorials on using it.
