Help. My Gimp 2,6 keeps shuting down. (Loads of new brusches)
Hello!

I am a beginner but have been playing/working with GIMP for about a month or two, and I really love it. I also work as a designer so I really need Gimp in my work as well....

When I downloaded a bunch of brusches (about 20 sets first) it started to shut down every 20 minutes? or so....well, it just froze, and I had to close GIMP with "ctrl + alt + del"

However, I continued using it, and I downloaded even more brusches. And now it is totally impossible to work with it at all. You can still start GIMP (it takes forever though) but when its done and I choose a picture and do 1-2 things with it (for example brightness/contrast) an error message shows up saying explorer.exe has encounter a problem, and then i have to shut gimp down.

Do I have to many brushes? I thought maybe my computer are not "strong" enough, so we "transferred" gimp and all brushes to my husbands computer, which is stronger (sry if I use wrongs words) BUT the problem remains...Please help me!!!

Looks like you have a memory problem... Gimps takes some memory for every brush it will have available. The more brushes, the more memory. When you change something in your image, Gimp takes some more memory to store data for an eventual undo.

How many brushes have you got, by the way? How much RAM on your PC? Is virtual memory enabled? If so, how big? (this is in Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Advanced on Windows XP)?

Thank you so much for your answer. Maybe its time to clear.....I dont use all of them. Maybe I have downloaded 100 sets.

I checked memory like you said, and it says 2046 MB. I have no idea if that is a lot or to little?? (my husband is the computer-personWink

2048Mb (aka 2GB) is sufficient on Windows XP if you aren't keeping any other big applications around at the same time. Can't tell for Vista or Seven. You may also have virtual memory disabled (ask you computer person :-).

The only pattern I use the the "Warning" one, which is very efficient to detect semi-transparent areas (the default background checkerboard is not visible enough at time).
