Help increasing font size of tips at bottom of image window
I just upgraded to GIMP 2.8.4 for Mac after spending months using an older version. At the bottom of the image window are tips for using whatever tool one is currently using. Unfortunately, these tips are TINY! I can barely see them! Is there any way to increase their size via GIMP preferences?

Note that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to editing program code so if this is required I will need specific step by step instructions. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

EDIT: Additionally, I've noticed that image windows always stay behind the toolbox and layer windows. Is there any way to reverse the ordering? (So that image windows can move in front of the toolbox/layer window?) With multiple image windows open on a small screen I need all the space I can get.

BINGO! I think I found it. Although use caution as it requires a bit of coding design-wise to get what you want.

But try the theme like above poster recommends first

*Sunmarsh, I strongly recommend you test the below method on a portable version of gimp to see if it displays ok. You don't need to install the portable version, just extract it into a folder you make.

Formatting the image status bar
Go to Edit > Preferences...
Then on the left sidebar under the tree of "Image windows"
click the plus to open it if you need. Then click "Title & Status"
(image/Figure 12.13 in the link below)
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-pimping.htm...ndow-title

****You want the "Image Statusbar Format" space****

The variables/codes are seen directly below "1.12.1. Choosing a Format"

Before you make any changes, you might want to see what is typed in the space already just to see how it works.

RE: Help increasing font size of tips at bottom of image window
EDIT: This post is in response to ofnuts' post. Now reading iForStyle007's post.

Thanks so much for the info. I had messed with the window manager hints before but the pop-up telling me changes would occur on restart was hidden behind all the windows. XD

Also, I'm having trouble figuring out how to edit the theme file. 1) I can't seem to find it and 2) I've read that it can't be edited unless one has 'administrator permission'. Not sure what that means. Should I just download a copy of the default theme and edit it? I've tried finding one but have had no luck. Not sure what to do at this point.

iForStyle007: Editing the image status bar preferences will only allow me to change what information is displayed there, not how that information is displayed. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for the info though! Smile

Lol, you may very well be right about just changing what is/how displayed! XD

I also found under the variables the display/resolution options. Maybe increasing these can help.
I'll link it below

http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-pimping.htm...fs-display

You can find the displaay options right below the "Title & Status" on the left sidebar.
Again, I recommend you test it out on portable gimp first

RE: Help increasing font size of tips at bottom of image window
Thanks again for continuing to assist, but I'd rather not change the resolution of the entire program, I just want to adjust the font size of the image status bar...

Also, I have located the folder for the default theme. Inside are a bunch of images and a file called 'gtkrc'. I have opened the gtkrc file and there are some variables in there that I am able to adjust. I have changed the "GimpDock::font-scale" and it does increase font-size on just about everything BUT the image status bar. Is anyone familiar with the gtkrc file or know if/what I need to do to adjust the image status bar font settings?
