Sad HELP! Gimp 2.6 Crashing/Extremely Slow
Ok, so I have been using Gimp for around a year now, I love it! Have never had any problems... until now. Ramdomly enough it has decided to stop working for me. On start up it takes alot longer than usual... 20 - 30 mins longer than usual! The start up splash screen freezes, along with the rest of my desktop. I always run it with nothing else running so I don't think there's anything conflicting there.

My windows updates are fully up to date, along with drivers etc. This really frustrates me because as I said, I have been running Gimp for almost a year without a single glitch.

I have also tried uninstall/reinstall, tried running the older build. If I do by some miracle get it to run, its extremely slow, freezes during simple tasks. At my witts end! Any suggestions greatly apprieciated Smile Specs below -

RE: HELP! Gimp 2.6 Crashing/Extremely Slow
1) don't panic Smile

2) rename your Gimp profile: (see this topic to find it). This will make Gimp restart with a new, clean profile. You may have installed a bad app in it (or a rogue exe). If that fixes it, out of curiosity, have a look in the "plugins" subdirectory and tell us what you find there.

3) if this doesn't fix it, go to the Gimp installation directory with the explorer, search for gimp.exe, and in the same directory you should find gimp-console.exe. Make a shortcut to start it, and in the properties of the shortcut, set the parameters to "--verbose". Run it and tell us what you see, and what are the last messages displayed if it hangs.

4) while it runs (or limps...) start the task manager. How busy are (or is) the CPUs? What are the top processes in CPU usage? How much memory is used? Is the system swapping (lots of disk activity)?

Done step one and so far so good, fingers crossed! Thanks SO much, I've been lost without it!

The plug ins directory is empty, should it be? (Forgive me. Fairly clueless with alot of this stuff!)
C:\Users\Dee\Gimp2.6\plug-ins ..... Is this the directory your looking for?

Yes, that's the one... but in the previous version of your profile, the one that you just renamed...

Many performance problems with Gimp come from the sheer number of brushes/fonts etc...in the profile (or in the main installation directory, although its a bad idea to install things there usually). If you copy over parts of your old profile, (brushes/fonts/patterns/gradients...)
don' t copy too much...
