RE: help downloading brushes
put the brush file in your user folder

C -> user -> "your username" -> .gimp-2.8 -> brushes

RE: help downloading brushes
In the meantime I assembled some screenshots of a brush from texturemate & gimp

Looking at a typical example, (some will be different with lots of files, some might just be a single file.) Look for information on the site as well eg .. The .abr is compatible with Photoshop 7 and newer as well as Gimp.

What you download is a zip archive. Unzip that and for this one, there are 2 files, a brush.abr ( but it could be a set of gimp gbr files ) and a jpg file showing what the brushes look like. You do not need the jpg.

Put the brush.abr (or brush1.gbr...brush10.gbr) into your local Gimp brushes folder, for windows something like C:\Users\'your_id'\.gimp-2.8\brushes

Start up Gimp and there is set of brushes (a PS .abr brush can contain more than a single brush) in the brushes dialog. If you have put the abr file in the brushes folder with Gimp running, use the little green refresh icon bottom of the brushes dialog.

Many of these abr brushes are very large, use the scaling slider in the brush tool options to set the size.

i downloaded a grunge brush from texturemate and it was 2500x2500px

probably better using the image as a texture instead, because Gimp started lagging big time
