Hello everybody... new member, though not exactly new to Gimp
Well, I've been using Gimp for a long time (probably since I first installed Linux in 1997) but have never really spent enough time studying how to use it... I just made use of it for adjusting my photos, and a little bit of text layout and annotation of screenshots.

I have a bit more time on my hands, now, and so I want to get to know more about how it works and what I can do with it. I picked up a second hand input tablet a few weeks ago (had to buy a new pen, because the AA cell had leaked) and got that set up and had a bit of fun colouring scans of a mecha to test the pressure/opacity settings and was very pleased it.

However, I am by no means an artist and have red-green colour blindness, probably deuteranomaly, which makes differentiating between (and naming) certain shades of brown and green a bit tricky for me. I once brought home a picture from primary school showing trees with brown leaves and green bark standing in a field of red grass... the wa crayons I had at the time matched what I saw, but not what everybody else saw.

But I digress... here I am, wanting to learn about Gimp!

Welcome...

In Gimp you can always use the Pointer dialog (Windows/Dockable dialog/Pointer) and it will tell you the RGB value of the pixel under the pointer.

If I'm working on my own on something, colours are not so much of a problem. The problems arise when somebody starts saying (or writing) things like "take out the brick-red box that's partly hidden behind the lime-green circle, and put an olive-green triangle in the middle". And the people saying such things look at me as if I'm from outer space when I talk about hex triplets, pantone numbers or X11 colour names...

I use the eye-dropper tool a lot.
