half of the menu items greyed out (not indexed mode error)
hi,

i just started using gimp on ubuntu 13.10 . almost half of the menu items are greyed out. most of the filters work or ar not greyed out, g'mic is greyed out and so is most of the stuff in the file menu (export, save, save as, etc.) . i already tried re-installing gimp from the software center with no prevail. this is how it was the first time i installed it on this new ubuntu 13.10 .

is there something that i can do to maybe refresh the entire gimp folder maybe? maybe delete it then re-install gimp. i really dont know if this would fix anything though.

this is really irritating. and no its not the "image RGB/indexed mode" problem.

im pretty sure i dont have anything installed (like some weird ubuntu restricted access fake file) that could interfere with the interface at all as this is a pretty fresh installation. the most i have installed that might even be close to interfering with the interface is "pipelight" which is for flash and silverlight, not gimp.
i even tried different color profiles and none of them work. i even downloaded the brand new color profiles from adobe. none of those work either.

the only way i got ALL of the menu options back, including g'mic, was opening gimp through rawtherapee (basically adobe lightroom for ubuntu) which might be of some use in finding an answer to this?

i already have everything i need installed including the ubuntu restricted access extras and such.

i just would like gimp to open normally with all the normal file menu options enabled like everyone elses and not be all greyed out .. help!

yes, its when i opened the image through "open with" right-click menu on the actual images. it does it with the right-click menu and opening gimp from the unity icon then selecting "open" from the file menu.

all of the options below the "open" file menu items place holder are greyed out, g'mic is greyed out and so are options like "scale image".

i just deleted the whole .gimp 2.8 folder in "home" and reinstalled it and everything was still greyed out

RE: half of the menu items greyed out (not indexed mode error)
the only thing not greyed out in the file menu where save and export and things like that are is "overwrite *****" and exit, as well as the "open" file type options above the placeholder between "export" and "save" and such.

i just tried to open gimp right after re-install with the gimp icon and it loaded everything in the splash menu (at first boot type loading) and then after it opened and i opened a photograph all those things were still greyed out ..

RE: half of the menu items greyed out (not indexed mode error)
ok so we have some progress on this. after i deleted the .gimp 2.8 folder in the "home" directory, opening gimp by clicking on the icon and then loading the picture with "open..." works 100% now! ^ _ ^

the only thing that DOESNT work (as in all those menu items are all greyed out still) is the "open with gimp" from the right click menu.

all i did was uninstall gimp from the software center, make sure all that was done, then delete the .gimp-2.8 folder from the "home" directory then re-install gimp.

now im thinking if i delete the main directory of gimp in the same fashion after it is uninstalled then re-installing it will bring back all the greyed out options when it is opened with an image from the right click menu?

Before you do that if you haven't already:

Try rolling over one of those greyed out menu items on the "Filters" menu section with your mouse

Then
while the mouse is still hovering over it, check the Gimp status bar at the bottom of the canvas.
Does is say anything? Try clicking the filter your mouse is on(greyed out)
Does is say anything then?

I got an error message at the status bar when a filter couldn't operate in a certain condition.

Sounds like a bug in the Unity appmenu
This may be caused by the following bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc...ug/1263205

Try using something other than Unity (e.g. KDE, LXDE) or run
sudo apt-get remove indicator-appmenu

RE: half of the menu items greyed out (not indexed mode error)
omg, dude, are you serious?? that was it!! thank you SO FREAKING MUCH . . .

sorry for the delayed response i just hadnt set up email notifications and thought nobody replied.

ofnuts: ubuntu (windows has this problem too maybe..?) it wont let you take a screenshot with a menu open, like, the file menu or anything ..

for anyone else with this problem i just followed the solution here:

http://www.webupd8.org/2011/03/disable-a...buntu.html

to "Disable the AppMenu Indicator in Ubuntu (Unity) for all applications"

it will just make your global menu show up in each window for most programs (not nautilus, the main file browser) and not the top bar with the time, date, etc. in it .

thanks again! wow .. that link was such a help gmatht!

ofnuts: it seems like a constant bug in ubuntu 13.10 . i was going to just wait until ubuntu 14 came out in april but i just love gimp so much that i wound up back here after installing ubuntu 13.10 again and not wanting to boot into windows every time i want to use gimp. i have a dual boot and it was bugging me like crazy!

thanks guys. i guess this is just the temporary solution until the bug in ubuntu for gimp 2 is fixed in an update somehow.

going to work on getting used to this new menu thing but its worth it! as long as gimp works now i am content on that matter.

oh, and by the way, if you try the other option to edit the shortcut for gimp in usr/share/applications it just removes it from the "open with" in the right click menu and thats a bad idea . .

just tried it one more time from the right click "open with gimp", before i posted this, and ya, it works fine.

amazing ..

RE: half of the menu items greyed out (not indexed mode error)
but ya, thats what it looks (looked) like! i couldnt export, couldnt open g'mic .. etc ..

it was some kind of global/non-global menu bug .
it works fine now.

knowing that it works anyways in ubuntu 12 and not ubuntu 13 makes me think that it will be ok in ubuntu 14 when (or shortly after) it comes out since 12 and 14 are both long term support versions ..
