Grief and Fustrations of Transition - From Photoshop to GIMP
Hi all

I've been painting in Photoshop for several years and currently I'm looking at using GIMP for painting purposes. Usually, I'm fairly good with just playing around in a new package and customize things to my liking. However, there are two things I can't figure out how to change.
  1. Why does Eraser and Paintbrush use the same brush shape? How do I change it so I can have different brush shape for the two tools?
  2. How do I change the 'tool toggle' from Ctrl to Alt?
  3. How do I hide the mouse cursor when painting?
There are also a few other features that seems counter-intuitive to me, for example, why do people need the layer boundary option? I went through a handful of hair before I discovered the layer to image size option.

EDIT: Problem 1 fixed. Uncheck the Paint Option Shared Between Tools in preferences fixes this...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Having a layer smaller than the image has its uses (Align tool, for instance). Even if Gimp and PS share certain basic design principles, their UI is different, and Gimp doesn't try to be Photoshop.
Hi! Thanks for the reply.

Ctrl will toggle between for example, in the zoom tool, zoom in and zoom out. I use it to quickly switch between paint brush and colour picker.

Another question, is there a way to cache the font or prevent the font lookup so GIMP doesn't take forever to load? It also seems to crash GIMP 50% of the time...

My small brain won't handle a large font collection anyway. How many fonts do you have?
One trick you can play is split your fonts between several directories, and select the directory in Edit/preferences/folders (this also works for palettes, gradients, brushes...). Otherwise it is said that the font cache (in %userprofile%\.fonts.cache-1 may get corrupted and erasure is harmless (it will be rebuilt)).

I don't actually have the font cache file. Manual and windows search turned up nothing. Could it be hiding anywhere else? Could I have accidentally disabled font caching?
