Grey and white checker board
When I try and move my image out of the little grey and white checker board area I can't see the image and can't see my "flipped" portion of it.

How to I get the flipped image to show without that stupid freaking grey and white cheacker board showing up!!!!!

RE: Grey and white checker board
That checkerboard is the image canvas (ie, your drawing table), so this is what you see when there is nothing else to see (no layer, or transparent layers).

Since this is also the limits of what Gimp will show you, you can't really move things out of it and at the same time still see them. If you need more space on the canvas, you have to enlarge it: "Image/Canvas size".

In slow motion:

We have a layer like this that fills the whole canvas:
[attachment=613]

If we want to duplicate it and see both original and copy we have to enlarge the canvas (note that height/width have to be "unlinked" since we change the aspect ratio):
[attachment=614]

This gives an enlarged canvas with a checkerboard where there is nothing to see:
[attachment=615]

We duplicate the layer, and the copy positions itself above its original (so unless we check in the layers dialog, we wouldn't not notice)
[attachment=616]

We flip the top layer:
[attachment=617]

In the Layers dialog, we reorder the layers so that the original layer comes on top and becomes visible again:
[attachment=618]

And we drag it to position at the bottom:
[attachment=619]

Many of the steps above can be done in a different order (position first then flip...), the only steps that really need to be done in any order is 1) resize canvas 2) position layers.
