Gradient Leaves Outline of Text
I am trying to do a mirror effect on text using a gradient on the inverted copy of the text, but this leaves a faint outline of the text in the area I think should have been "gradiented" out. I'm creating .png files, one against a transparent BG and the other against a solid BG. Is there a setting or option I am missing?

Depends how you are creating the fade gradient. If it has anything to do with color-to-alpha or the "color erase" mode then there is an explanation (and a possible fix). If you used another method there is likely an explanation also but I can't find it without knowing more.

I use the method I saw in several tutorials of creating a new image with transparent BG, writing text on the layer in FG color, duplicating the layer, moving the text down, inverting it, doing an alpha to selection to select just the text, add a layer mask, then doing a FG to black gradient on the bottom, inverted text. Then apply the layer mask. Works fine, but leaves the outline where not expected.

RE: Gradient Leaves Outline of Text
Your problem is the alpha-to-selection... the anti-aliasing make some border pixels semi transparent, so they are semi-selected, and your gradient tool isn't fully applied to them so they don't become fully transparent like the rest.... A proof of this is that if you hit the Del key after the alpĥa-to-selection, you will see that border pixels aren't erased...

However, if you think about it, you don't need it at all... in other words, your procedure, without the alpha to selection, works as well (in fact, better...), because your layer is already transparent elsewhere... Try it....

Bonus points: the gradient is linear and doesn't produce a very convincing fade. However, once you have a gradient, you can modify it with the curves tool (still editing the layer mask of course). First attachment has the gradient changed with the curve tool to go from 0->0 to 255->128 and curved below the straight line (128->40)

Extra bonus point: a real reflection loses color saturation. So you can create a gradient from the foreground color to white (white is 0 color saturation) and apply to to the reflection layer (again, no need to select anythings) in "saturation" mode (in this mode, only the saturation component of the tools is used to change the layer's pixels), so that your mirrored test is progressively desaturated while it becomes transparent (2d attachment).
