Gradient inside of shape
I would like to apply a gradient inside closed path with black at the outside transitioning to white at the center. Is this possible?

Yes, in the Blend tool (Blend), this is what the "shaped" gradients (in the shape selector) are for. Just create a selection from your path, and click drag anywhere inside the selection (start position and length are unimportant).

You have to change the mode to radial and draw from the center. If I understood the question properly.
