Gradient fill doesn't work the same in Gimp 2.10.2?
In Gimp 2.8.16 If I am working with an image with an alpha channel, select a certain color or area, click on the Gradient Blend Tool then swipe the tool across the screen at the angle I want the selected areas ONLY fill with the gradient.

When I do the exact same thing with the exact same image in Gimp 2.10.2 initially it works, but when I click select none the gradient paints into the entire image, overwrites the original image content and the path line remains.

It's infuriating!!! No doubt it's something I am doing wrong so can someone please tell me how to fix this?
