Gold Leaf Text
Hey guys,

I would love to be able to produce gold leaf text on a brown leather background.
I watched the Photoshop tutorial about it but the menus and results were too different to follow along. Are there any tutorials about doing this with Gimp 2.8.6?
I've seen some excellent tutorials about creating chrome text with effects but I can't find any for gold.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Ciao,
John

RE: Gold Leaf Text
You can get something like this very easily

Big screenshots so not in-line
1. Add your text in a suitable gold colour (try rgb 212,170,0) and duplicate the text layer.

2. On one of the text layers, usually the lower one, colour select the text, fill with a pattern. This is a standard Gimp pattern but do experiment. I would think the examples you saw used one of the Render -> Cloud scripts. Then give it a gaussian blur.

3. On the top (gold coloured) text layer use Filters -> Map -> Bump map with the patterned, blurred text as the bump map. Experiment with the settings, particulally azimuth, ambient and depth.
Ok that, turn off the bump map text layer.

Thats the basics you can add to the effects with Filters -> Light & Shadow -> Lighting Effects or maybe a drop shadow. Just experiment.

RE: Gold Leaf Text
Hey guys,

Thanks for the quick responces. I'll be experimenting away for the next few hours. Wow, I never liked the learning curve of any program before but I find I'm really getting into all of the possibilities of what this program can do. I find remembering the "steps" and using them in the proper order is the most challenging. It's a slow process when following along in a tutorial video, pausing, making the change, watching, pausing again, making the following change, etc.

But I guess in the end it will all work out. It will just take some time, that's all.

Thanks again.

Ciao,
John

RE: Gold Leaf Text
Hey guys,

Well, here's what I've done so far, but I would have liked to brighten the text a tad and given it a pattern or texture so that it looked like leaf or filigree, whatever you call it.

I shall continue my journey of discovery and, hopefully be able to update you soon. By the way, this is my first piece of work in Gimp, so at least I'm learning.

Hmmmm, . . . I just noticed the mistake on the left edge. I'm not sure what happened there. How do you correct that?

RE: Gold Leaf Text
I don't think you have the bumpmapping yet. Your image looks very flat.
Remember that there are no metallic colours as such, everything is done with light and shadow and shading.

Once you bump map mastered, you are there.

In this example
Top line is a copy of the gold coloured text for bumpmapping
Middle is the end result
Bottom is a copy of the bump map and in that
A is a plain colour with a stroked outline - looks a little raised but not much.
B has been filled with a rendered 'fog' much as you see in tutorials, gives a bit of texture, a bit of 'shininess'
C is a straight gaussian blur, this gives a nice rounded effect.
D is the letter filled white and some marks hand drawn in. Just to show the effect a pattern might make.

Thank you, sir!

I shall plug along with the new info.

Could you tell me why I have a white line on the left edge of the picture?
And what I can do in the future to prevent it?

John

Don't know, did it come with the leather texture? It is not pure white, one pix wide, rgb 250,251,237 Did you have it in another layer at one time?

RE: Gold Leaf Text
Yep, that's it. I had it in another layer. I went back in and fixed it, then deleted everything and started all over again. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.

Thanks,
