Since you are having difficulties with the Partha build, have you tried contacting Partha directly? As I mentioned earlier my experience has shown him to be very helpful and approachable.

RE: Gimp will not run (Mavericks)
For me, Gimp is currently in my applications folder.
I don't understand the "it gets unpacked wherever you saved it" part though.

by saved, they mean downloaded to, then when you unpackaged it, it will either make a folder in the place you downloaded, or extract all the files into the folder you downloaded to.

In windows it would be like unzipping a zipped file / folder.

Found Solution
I was having same exact problem as you running all the same versions. Please note that I do not use fonts, but I found a solution that allows all of my regular functions to still operate and you will be able to startup gimp easily.
open terminal, then type cd /Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/Resources/etc/fonts
after this type in ls
There should be two files listed: conf.d and another called font.config or something of that sort. whatever the name of the font.config file is, type rm followed by a space then the name of that file. this will delete that file.
Afterwards exit terminal and start up gimp. it will load faster than ever

RE: Gimp will not run (Mavericks)
I deleted the fonts.conf file but experienced no new behavior. Gimp simply stopped responding and sucked close to a gig of memory.

This is what I tried in terminal-

Thomas-Mayers-iMac-2:~ thomasmayer$ cd Applications
Thomas-Mayers-iMac-2:Applications thomasmayer$ ls
Gimp-2.8.app Team Fortress 2.app
Thomas-Mayers-iMac-2:Applications thomasmayer$ Gimp --verbose
-bash: Gimp: command not found
Thomas-Mayers-iMac-2:Applications thomasmayer$ Gimp-2.8.app --verbose
-bash: Gimp-2.8.app: command not found
Thomas-Mayers-iMac-2:Applications thomasmayer$

I don't know OSX much, but I understand it's mostly a Unix under the hood. To start a command like this from any directory in a terminal, it has to be in the "path" (the list of directories the systems searches for executable commands), and it is likely not in it since it is meant t be started by clicking on an icon. So you have to find where the executable is, make that directory your current directory ("CD" command), and then start Gimp using "./{Gimp executable file} --verbose" (dot-slash-executable-space-dash-dash-verbose).

Hey! Your problem is that you have a disk partition that is not case sensitive.

You can solve it creating a sparse image, and putting the "gimp" app in to run it.

You can follow this tutorial
and take care with "format" tab is a case sensitive option.

RE: Gimp will not run (Mavericks)
Wow I forgot about this thread, it's been awhile. Thanks for the help!
This fixed the problem, it took a while but GIMP eventually appeared on my second monitor (weird place for it to launch right?)

Once again thank you! Now it's time to learn how to use it Smile
