gimp transforms outline of selection but not content!
This is driving me nuts (of course). I have a photo of some furry animals. I need to select a bit of the fur, elongate the selection, deform it a bit to add some curve to it, and then place it on the photo to make the critters furrier.

I select a strip of fur, copy, paste, and make the now floating selection into a new layer. (I want to leave the original image as is and just add some extra bits to it derived from the image so it looks like the same kind of fur as the animals already have.) I enlarge the new layer so that the transformed selection still fits in it. The background is transparent. I select all the non-transparent pixels, and use, for instance, the "scale" tool. It nicely shows the outline stretching as per instructions, but when I hit "Scale" only the marching-ants-outline has changed and the content -- the actual bit of fur I'm trying to change -- is still in the same place and the same size it was.

The same thing happens with the skew tool and the cage tool and every other deform tool. What the hell is going on? Why is it doing this? I've searched high and low. I've been at this for days. It seems like it ought to be simple.

If there's a site somewhere that explains this, please give me a direct link. Saying "just Google it" isn't going to help because that's what I've been doing and I'm obviously doing it wrong! Huh

I have a feeling that you might still have your original selection open.
Try
make selection
copy
kill selection
paste
make your transform on the floating selection.

something like this

This is problem I think. You are making a selection on your pasted layer which is not necessary. Transform the whole layer.

That sounds likely! Thanks. I'm off to try it now!

Bit later: that's it! Works perfectly: make sure it's deselected, and operate on the whole layer. Thank you again. You've saved my sanity. Big Grin

(Why does gimp make some of these super-basic operations so bass-ackwards difficult? Why??)
