GIMP stopped by pop up box
I downloaded GIMP 2 a few days ago and have been getting used to it, having been a Photoshop user for many years. I am now getting the hang of it until today when I booted up my computer, running Windows 7, I tried to open a new image and was faced with a pop up which states 'There is no disk in the drive. Please insert disk into drive \Device\ Harddisk 4\DR4' I cannot get rid of this until I close GIMP. I have tried several times - no different. I have unistalled and reinstalled Gimp. Same problem. GIMP now is unusable. Any ideas, please?

I always wonder when 'I was a PS user' crops up as this has nothing to do with Gimp.

Using Win7. Are you using a standard default Gimp installation?

Gimp is only unusable on your machine, works for many thousands of others. Since Gimp was working but is now borked what has changed?

Are you using a networked drive or an external drive?

Reinstalling over and over again rarely does any good. First thing to do is delete your Gimp profile C:\Users\'your name'\.gimp-2.8 Start Gimp up again and see what happens.

RE: GIMP stopped by pop up box
If erasing the Gimp profile as above is not enough:

1) Can you open images from your file explorer (instead of using File/Open in Gimp)
2) Have you got the same problem in the Save/Export dialogs
3) Have you got a directory "C:\Users\{your_id}\Application Data\gtk-2.0 and if so what are the contents?

RE: GIMP stopped by pop up box
From my understanding this is a Windows OS issue that can occur with various applications due to the way Windows allocates temporary drive letters to removable storage devices. EG your system has a C: drive and you attach a SD card or camera etc and Windows allocates say drive E: to it. You open a file from that device in Gimp.
Next time you start Gimp it checks the document history list but no longer finds the E: drive.

1. I have heard of two solutions, temporarily re-attach your mass storage devices until Windows attaches one using the same 'missing' drive letter.
(Which may or may not be difficult as you may not know which drive letter is the culprit as the error does not actually display which letter was allocated)
Gimp will start as normal.
The open the Document History dialog and delete the offending file from the history.

2. The sledgehammer approach - perform a registry hack to supress windows from displaying the offending errors.
See here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7khU0ZY9gBU
NB Take appropriate precautions before modifying the registry such as Creating a Restore point and backing up the registry file if you decide to perform this solution.

Thank you all, very much, for your help, particularly fluffybunny, whose suggestion No. 1 did the trick.

Eh, it it does work, But you should find out what drive letter is your hard drive on the computer

default is C :

and specify Gimp to install to that drive under the "Program Files" folder of that same drive.
This way, you won't have to worry about any read disk errors & won't have to plug/unplug the external drive just to get Gimp to work.

Another way would be to use the portable version of gimp & extract it to a folder on your external harddrive or flash drive(usb), no install required ! Smile

(a Just in case FYI) External hardrive: has its own power source and it mostly temproarly plugged in like a flash usb thumb drive.
System Hardrive:
Is for the most part, permanent memory on your computer that can't be unplugged & stores all the program/software you install.
