GIMP Interface Reverted to Old Font
(I'm using Windows XP.)

All of the sudden, GIMP is now using the old style of fonts and interface, and I don't know why. The only thing that I can imagine might have caused it is that I just downloaded Synfiq and that used a similar interface. However, to test that theory, I just deleted Synfiq from my computer, but my GIMP interface is still in the old style.

I guess it's not a huge deal because (as far as I can tell) the change hasn't affected functionality, but it's still very odd and confusing (and kind of ugly, too).

Any thoughts?

RE: GIMP Interface Reverted to Old Font
A few tests in a WinXP + Gimp 8.2 VM and it does look like synfig is the cause.
In the installer there is a tick box option for GTK but installed or not-installed makes no difference, the theme changes.

If it is just the font you can restore this with a bit of simple editing in the gimp default theme.

You need to add this line (notepad is no good so unless you have a proper editor, use wordpad)
gtk-font-name = "sans 8"
at the start of the gtkrc file in
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\themes\Default

an alternative is to hunt around for a new gimp 2.8 theme, IMHO most are dark and dire.

RE: GIMP Interface Reverted to Old Font
Thanks, rich2005.

The font size is indeed fixed (and, incidentally, this is the first ever GIMP, uh, "coding" that I've ever done, just pasting your command there). However, the interface issues - the blockiness and unevenness of the tabs and menus - persists.

But thanks to both you and Paynekj for confirming the Synfiq diagnosis and the tips. (Paynekj, I never altered the GIMP interface or anything, so I'm not sure what you mean by "customization".)

There are a couple of decent light themes from samj here

might be useful

Yeah, thanks for the link.

This isn't THAT big a deal, it seems to only be an aesthetic thing. And as long as the cause of it is now known (well, in a general sense, at least), then I'm nog going to bother plugging in a whole new design.

But that's just me. I'm sure many future users and lurkers might run into this problem and they'll definitely wanna use alternate skins after this. (Or perhaps even find a way to prevent it!)

Meanwhile, for the non-spammers amongst us....

....the issue still persists.

I deleted Synfig from my PC, and fully re-installed GIMP, but still there's the funky old interface on GIMP.

RE: GIMP Interface Reverted to Old Font
I must have too much time on my hands Wink

Great thing about a VM, can't do any damage, so XPsp3, Gimp 2.8.2 & synfig.

Monitoring the synfig installation, the full thing nothing unticked. Gives
files & folders 333, reg entries 36 - it is a pretty clean installation.
Ran it once just to make sure it worked. Then uninstalled it using its own uninstaller.
Again pretty clean just left an empty synfig folder and a couple of reg entries.
but
The gimp theme still changed. Uninstalled gimp, very clean everything goes except the local .gimp-2.8 which I deleted.
Installed Gimp again and sure enough the pesky theme was still changed.
So, what remains from the synfig installation? Looking at the install log, this file
C:\Documents and Settings\"your user name"\.gtkrc-2.0
deleted this and got the old Gimp theme back.

Great work! Thanks a lot!

So (for the benefit of anybody searching for this in the future through keywords), if your GIMP interface changes after installing Synfig....just follow rich2005's instructions here to fix it.

(I think this might be the first time somebody besides OfNuts has solved an issue here!)
