GIMP freezing on start up
Since I can't seem to get anyone to respond to me in any other sites, I figured I'd try here.. anyway.

I had recently installed GIMP on the official site, but the thing is, on start up, when the green bar gets to loading fonts, it stops working and freezes. I don't have any custom fonts installed, and I make sure to delete the folder since I uninstalled it after giving up. I have a windows 8 computer by the way-- so I'm not sure if it's compatible with it to begin with.

Can anyone help?

RE: GIMP freezing on start up
Can you turn the brightness of your monitor up please Smile or maybe you have changed the default forum setting,

What version of Gimp are you using ie 2.8.10 or 2.8.14 or...?

I have installed Gimp 2.8.10 in a Windows 8 virtual machine (32bit) and that worked ok.

The usual advice. After installing Gimp, for the first run, set Gimp going, do not touch anything, keyboard, mouse... Go for a walk. It can take several minutes, sometimes longer for Gimp to find all the resources, although in a clean installation, no extra fonts, no AV, just windows, it takes about 4 minutes.

Do you mean the text color? If it's to dark I'm sorry!

I'm using 2.8.14. currently though.. should I try and use 2.8.10 instead?

And I tried doing that at least for an hour or so and it still didn't load past it, no matter how many times I opened it and left it. Maybe I'm not being patient enough but I kept trying and nothing! Sad

I'm also having this problem. I've been using Gimp on my mac for years now and this just started up last week.

I didn't download a new version of Gimp, I was using the same version I'd downloaded awhile ago. One day it stopped loading once it got to fonts. I waited forever but nothing happened. I uninstalled Gimp and downloaded the newest version form the official website, but it's still not loading. One day I was able to get it to open again, but I didn't to anything to it. The next day it wouldn't open.

I did download PS Elements 12 so maybe that's the problem? But I've uninstalled it now and I still can't get Gimp to open.

I really hope someone can help us here because I can't seem to figure it out.

RE: GIMP freezing on start up
Alright so I finally figured out what was wrong. I'd downloaded a font a couple of months ago. I deleted that font and now Gimp is opening again. It's weird though because I didn't have any problems with that font until now...

I hope you're able to figure out what your problem is soon Smile

From your earlier post, If you waited an hour then Gimp is not going to install. Did it make a Gimp profile folder C:\Users\your-id\.gimp-2.8 ? If it did, you could delete that and try again.

You can see from the earlier post how one little "resource" can affect Gimp, and it seems to get worse each time Windows OS adds something.

As I said earlier, I do know that Gimp 2.8.10 installs and runs in a "vanilla" Win 8.0
Even though your computer is brand spankin' new Win 8.1 and with it all sorts pre-installed, applications. That is where you need to look. One common cause of problems is Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Do you have that installed?

It did, and I did try to delete it and try again but still nothing sadly. GIMP is liking to be a butt lately for me.

Oh I see.. well I guess even if your computers new or old it just depends on different things from what it sounds like. I do not have that installed or any anti-virus (I used to have Mcaffee but the trial ran out so I unistalled it).

My understanding is that the OP spent one hour restarting Gimp... not that Gimp remained hung (or working for one hour).

To the OP: Gimp can take an awful lot of time building the font catalog when it runs for the first time (even with all valid fonts). So start it, and let it run for at least 30 minutes.

Yeah, I expressed that badly. I did mean first run, rather than installing Gimp, although AV's have been known to interfere with this as well.

In a clean Win7, in a VirtualBox VM, Gimp takes 4 minutes here for a first run, finding resources and creating a profile. One day I will load up with lots of fonts as an experiment.

That is why I wondered if a profile had ever been created.

RE: GIMP freezing on start up
I have a bug with 2.8.14 that has never shown before.
I load up preexisting xcf files(5100x3100) and they load correct.
If I then go file /open gimp will crash.

My workaround is first go file/new 640x480
then load the 5100x3100 xcf
then i can load other xcf files.

Weird, and this is a new feature of gimp since installed as 2.8.14

RE: GIMP freezing on start up
None of this is helping me at all, I still have the issue with it not loading. Is there any other help here? Not to sound rude but I just need to get it over with.

What should I do?

I only opened it and it still freezes at the start up when it's loading fonts. I know it means something must be wrong with that part of the file maybe but I swear no custom fonts aren't on my computer.

I'm not sure what you mean by disk or CPU activity besides it saying, "not responding."

You still have not confirmed how much time you gave to Gimp before declaring it frozen.

Ah I see... well that is interesting. I haven't really looked at that before but anyway.

I gave it at least an hour or a few minutes less before I gave up on it.
