Question GIMP freezes after 1 action
Hey everyone,

I'm sorry for posting another "I need help!" thread (seeing as how there are very many on this site) but I am at wits end.

When I start GIMP, I can perform ONE action before it locks up. I can open up a recent file, start a new one, select a tool, or anything else. But after I do that one action, the program completely locks up and I have to force close it.

I have tried restarting.
I have tried reinstalling.
I have tried google, but there are so many "Help GIMP is broken!" threads on the internet that prevent me from finding the fix (if any) to my exact issue.

Btw I'm on Win 7 64-bit.
edit: I'm also running version 2.8.8, but it did this in version 2.8.4 as well

Does anyone know what is going on? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time!

RE: GIMP freezes after 1 action
Try the above first then

I have Gimp running in a Win7 64 bit virtual machine, which has limited resources, with no problems at all.

Since the problem is the same for both gimp 2.8.4 and 2.8.8 it is most likely a problem outside of gimp. I would consider
A hardware problem, especially memory
A softwware problem such hardware drivers, virus scanner, M$ updates.

The only other Gimp thing I can think of, is working on very large images maybe with many layers.

I would give a reinstall one more go, but purge the existing files.
Uninstall Gimp using the uninstall menu
Check that 'C:\Program Files\Gimp 2' folders have gone if not delete it
Delete 'C:\Users\yourname\.Gimp-2.8' folders

Instead of the regular Gimp 2.8.8 installation, try an alternative from
http://www.partha.com where you can get a dedicated 64 bit version
http://www.partha.com/downloads/Gimp-2.8-64bit.exe which I think is Gimp 2.8.6

Yes AmeriCanadian, if after trying all the above suggested(including the Gimp profile) it still manages to act up.

Check out this thread I found, there are alot of replies to it, but about midway through there are clues to how to fix win7 crashing gimp 2.8. It might have something to do with 32-bit 64-bit OS

Heart RE: GIMP freezes after 1 action
Thanks everyone! Removing my profile and doing a fresh install of the 64-bit version worked wonders! Now I can get back to work Smile

Exclamation RE: GIMP freezes after 1 action
Problem not fixed after all >.<

Ok, so it WAS working fine, then decided not to. So I just said "F it" and reinstalled windows (i run a multi-HDD setup, windows reinstall ins't a big deal) and it seemed to work fine for a few days.

Now its back to the same problem. I have run virus scans, cleaned my registry, defragmented all of my drives, still nothing.

The thing is - it only effects gimp and gimp alone. No other programs have been suffering any issues.

Any thoughts?

Poor Ameri, you have done alot, OS reinstall would be too painful for me! Hang in there now we know its some kind of bug/error in gimp Smile

Time to try the above suggestion.

Right-click your gimp shortcut and add that "--verbose" after the " " (quotes) in the "Target:" field. Then run gimp & post up the results. Hopefully that will bring up another clue with whats going on, your on the right track getting 64-bit though Smile
