GIMP equivalent of CSS style "repeat-x" or "repeat-y"?
I would like to create a fairly complex gradient as a background by taking a long, 1-pixel-wide selection and then repeating it across the rest of the layer, either in the horizontal or vertical direction. I know how to do this easily in HTML using CSS: "repeat-x" or "repeat-y" in the background command.

Is there a way to do something similar in GIMP? The only thing I've been able to do is cut, paste, move it one pixel over, then select that and repeat, with a larger selection being created each time. Seems like there's got to be a way to make the computer do more of the work?

If I understand your requirements, either this script or this Windows stand-alone program may do what you require.

Thanks, Ofnuts! This is exactly what I was trying to do! Worked perfectly! I figured there had to be a way! :-)
