Gimp constantly quits
Hi,
It came to the point that every time I selected a spot with the scissors tool to erase that spot, I had to export it, quit gimp, and then reopen with the last save.

It wouldn't even let me export it and then load it again without quitting. I had to quit. The whole window disappears and the message is - GIMP quit unexpectedly.

Have you any suggestions??
Terry

Another thing which might be related is that I obviously have something selected and the "select none" (shift command "A") menu is grayed out like there is nothing to deselect.

RE: Gimp constantly quits
Does Gimp crash after you make a scissors selection & delete that spot?

Can you screenshot the problem?

There are more than one way to erase/fix obstuction / scratches / blemishes in photos than the erase tool.

Heal (advance clone)
Clone clone stamp
hold alt and left click to define a clean source, then click or drag to clone/heal

What kind of spots are you trying to erase?
And Do you want it to erase to white or transparent?

RE: Gimp constantly quits
I got a screen shot so you can see the selected spot above snoopy's head; and you can see the select none button grayed out; and you can see in the layer section that it is stuck on the floating pasted layer and won't change to the main picture by clicking.

My problem is that I can't seem to deselect. The rectangle used to work but now the whole image is erased if I make an additional rectangle or else the new rectangle appears and the old rectangle stays there also.

Where is the button where I can attach the screenshot?

Scroll down under the textbox, its above "Post Reply"

Options "Choose File" "Add Attachment"

First click "Choose File" navigate to screenshot, click ok
Then click "Add attachment"

...From your description, you wan to work on an anchored layer, not floating. Maybe thats why. Looking forward to your screenshot ^^

RE: Gimp constantly quits
as you can see from the attachment, - All I did was select a picture and chose "Open with GIMP". The picture is already selected and you can't get rid of the selection. Then the troubles mount because of that.
Thanks.
Terry

RE: Gimp constantly quits
I open the picture.
The picture is selected.
The deselect tool is grayed out in the menu.
If I put in a rectangle, the old selection does not disappear.

If you are referring to the yellow/black dashed line around the edge of the image you attached, that is the layer's perimeter/border, not a selection. If you were now to change the Image/Canvas size to something larger then you would see more clearly what I mean.
When you open an png, jpg etc with Gimp, it sets the Image/Canvas size equal to the layer(picture) size that you opened.
See attached image.

RE: Gimp constantly quits
I was going to say something similar, i couldn't see any visible animated marching ant selections, only the yellow dashed square border as mentioned by fluffybunny2.

...I addition to their above post, you can turn off the layer boundary via "View" 'view layer boundary, *But I highly advise you not to as it makes it harder to tell which layer your actively working on & how much space you have to edit on that layer.

RE: Gimp constantly quits
Here is a screen shot with a selection which I can't deselect. I can't turn off the floating layer and switch to a different layer.
None of the tools work.
I have to export and import it. I get one tool to work and then I have to export again, because the next tool I choose won't work.

When you have a floating layer, you must 'Anchor' the layer before doing anything else.
Under the layers menu, choose Anchor, or right click the floating layer and anchor it from there.
See Documentation here.

RE: Gimp constantly quits
lol, ninja'd ....

Turn back on your "view boundary mode" we now know its not that.

Yep, like the above poster said, you need to anchor your layer, until then its still in "clipboard-limbo" and its limited to what you can edit (you're lucky sometimes to be able to see the floating layer image)

A few ways I know to anchor floating layers:

-Right-click on floating layer, click "To New Layer"

-Double click on "Floating layer" & rename it

-On your keyboard press the keyboard shortcuts
(you'll find them on the menu "Layer > To New Layer ...... (keyboard shortcut) " )
