Gimp can't direct keyboard input to foreground window on osx
I am having a serious problem with gimp on my mackbook pro, running os x mavericks, but the problem also existed in mountain lion.

When any dialog box appears where there is a text box for keyboard input, the keystrokes go to the background gimp main window instead of the foreground dialog box. So it's impossible, for example, to type in a new file name on a save as dialog box. Another example is it's impossible to type in an image width in the scale image dialog box. This is true of all the dialog boxes I've checked.

This makes gimp practically unusable on a mac, and is therefore a serious problem. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a fix? I know of a workaround that involves typing in data into the mac text editor and pasting it into gimp dialog boxes, but that's ugly and unacceptable.

Thanks.

PS: "unacceptable" is an adjective that can only apply purchased software. What is unacceptable is that Mavericks changed something rather fundamental in the way it handles keyboard input...

I used the word unacceptable to describe the workaround, not the software. But the word is perfecty appropriate to describe this bug in gimp whether it's purchased software or not.

The bug is not in mavericks, by the way. No other software running under mavericks has this problem.

Thanks.

Irrelevant. As I stated in my original post, which seems to have been overlooked, I had this problem before I upgraded to Mavericks and was still on Lion. It can't be Mavericks if Mavericks wasn't even running when I first encountered this problem.

Hoping the blame game will stop and someone will take this problem seriously.

Also, I would appreciate it if there would be no further comments about expectations placed on unpaid software and paid software, and what is appropriate for each. No one should assume I haven't donated to this project. To say it is well worth supporting would be a severe understatement.

Thanks.

WOW... my first visit here to find an answer to the same problem philbair has, I agree with philbair, what an unhelpful group! Huh If you don't have anything constructive to post, then don't.

The problem seems to be fixed in 2.8.10

With an attitude like that, you're lucky that you're even being helped. Donations are from gratitude and voluntary, but they can help. More developers for the mac build of gimp would also help more as far as I know there is only one developer working on Gimp.

This is a helpful community, there are so many issues that have been solved, there are also other gimp forums. The mac build is developed by another dev as the main one was first unix based, then ported to other OS through its source code.
Maybe a brush up on Gimps history will enlighten you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP#History

There are some users that have the "I have a problem and want it solved right now" mindset, whether you paid for it or not is very logical reason & big factor on expected quality of the program (vs a work in progress, but always improving program).

Gimp is cross-platform, but there are always bound to be some small errors or bugs.

Fortunately there are workarounds, patches and updates. So the best thing you can do is be the program tester & send in the bug (report) bug to the mac build author of Gimp so they can re-release a fix.

We're a gimp community & try to do the very best to help eachother out, don't confuse donations & paid programs with free programs and unreported bug/issues.

If after googling, searching the manual & forum/s you still can't find a satisfactory fix, report the bug to the author and they can help you get it fixed more Smile happy gimping!
