GIMP Brush Categories
I have been using GIMP off and on for only about a year. I have hunted through the dox, the help system, and other forums. Don't know how many here are also familiar with Photoshop, but there is one feature in Photoshop that I love tremendously.

I love the way Photoshop has, what I call, brush categories. If I do not load all brushes, then I can click on a small button and choose another category of brushes. Photoshop has a popup dialog box with four buttons, asking me what I want to do. The four buttons are: Apend, (I forget), Replace, (I forget). I always choose Replace since this means I do not have a 1000 brushes I have to search through like I have to do with GIMP.

Is there a plan in the works to implement this same capability?

While at it, can the same be done for patterns, gradients, etc.?

Although I like GIMP, I much prefer these "categorizations" that Photoshop has so I do not have to hunt through a 1000 items.

Or is this a capability GIMP already has and I cannot find how to do this?

Keep in mind, that last I checked there are only a handful of developers working on Gimp. As PS is a paid-program, it will obviously have more robust features, especially when they can afford a bigger team of program designer / testers.

The nice thing about Gimp is they won't charge you for a new version with a few new features and being open-source, you can tweak the code to customize it to your taste.

So even if the brush categories don't make it to the drawing board,
there's hope that the community will see this as an ideal feature and someone will come up with something (maybe even YOU if your feeling scientific - mad-science-experimenty)

RE: GIMP Brush Categories
I ended up not so keen on tags, but then I effectively only use 3 or 4 brushes 99% of the time.

Going back to Gimp 2.8 when tags became available, this video describes their use

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTm3JtAkH78&hd=1

but I think a better way is a resources manager, and add brushes as required.

Ofnuts has one, this is the basic web page, http://gimp-path-tools.sourceforge.net/
(I always go around in circles from there, such is life Wink )
Ah, found it addoncollectionmanager http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-too...s/scripts/ about half way down.
(there is another page which I always end up on, http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-pat...s/scripts/ worth a look for some interesting plug-ins)

and there is another called GURM. http://registry.gimp.org/node/13473

Here you can load a set of brushes as needed. I keep sets zipped and use addoncollectionmanager.

One snag is, use either tags or resource manager, tags do not survive when brush sets are loaded/unloaded.

RE: GIMP Brush Categories
Thanks for all the help.

@iForStyle007
Wished I was that good of a programmer. I even find it very difficult to debug a small app.

@ofnuts
Have never liked using tags. They never seem to work. At least for me they don't. Else I am using them wrong.

@rich2005
Thanks for all the suggestions. Will experiment and see which works best for me.
