GIMP Books,
I scrounged around and came up with three books on GIMP.
The one book must have had a CD with it, missing now though. It wanted me to have Linux or Unix.Huh

I have a W-7 PC.
Should I get Unix? Or is it necessary for GIMP to work well if I had UNIX?

One of these books is Huge! "The Official GIMP handbook" by Kylander.

I'd sure like to make some different Icons for my File Folder Identifications.

RE: GIMP Books,
Gimp 1.0 was released in 1998 and "The Official GIMP handbook" in 1999 so that should be interesting reading from a historical point of view.

For Unix you should now read 'Unix-like' operating systems linux, BSD, Mac. Not all of these are free.

Switch to one of these? Perhaps. I moved to linux several years ago, I did not like the way M$ was going. I have never regretted the move, however I still run an XP machine for video editing, several reasons, paid money for the software, editing faster/more convenient than linux, DVD authoring better etc. But - It never goes anywhere near the internet and that is the big difference, security.
However most other things are better in linux.

These days, the Gimp windows versions are as up-to-date as the linux ones, so no gain there. If you want to try linux, there are options while you make up your mind, start with a 'live' CD then maybe a 'VirtualBox' installation, progress to a dual booting system until you find something you like.

Gimp Books - currently most are for Gimp 2.6.x The soon to be released 'Artists Guide' is 2.8. At the moment I would steer clear of buying anything. It is worth downloading the Gimp 2.8 help in PDF format and browse through it. http://gimp.linux.it/www/meta/ plus of course all the info on gimpforums.
