RE: GIMP animated GIF saved as a MPEG
I dont use it but AFAIK Gimp +GAP will save to an .avi via ffmpeg that youtube should accept.

The altenative is ImageMagick which comes with its own ffmpeg and is as simple as

convert animation.gif animation.mpg

This ends up as a 25 fps mpeg1 video with no audio. Does not change the frame size so if the animation is small, your video will be equally small. Youtube will complain about no audio, but accepts it anyway.

I do have a couple of quick'n'dirty bash/batch files for linux/windows if for example you need NTFS 29.something fps or change the duration, if anyone interested.

I have Windows Seven on my laptop.Did try to download the GAP at Gimp-Gap-2.6.0-Setup-exe...but to no avail.Did try the same thing but for version 2.4 and then 2.2 but...none would work.

RE: GIMP animated GIF saved as a MPEG
I gave up with Windows except for video editing when Vista came in. A happy move to Linux. Dont know anything about GAP but just to see how Imagemagick works with win7, a quick test in a virtual win7 *32bit* machine. (don't know how you people put up with this dumbed-down OS from M$).

Screenshot of a quick convert using IM http://i.imgur.com/HlVVg.jpg

and largely off-topic but to see if it works in win7. A batch file for windows. Copy and paste into a text file and save as something original like gif2mov.bat No guarantees with this, feel free to use, re-write, add-to etc.

REM convert an animated gif to a video
REM use gif2mov.bat 'gif name' 'duration'
REM no extension needed for gif name, output is the same name
REM needs ImageMagick installed. (ffmpeg comes with ImageMagick)
REM
REM use imagemagick to unpack the gif, removes transparency otherwise "blank' video
convert %1.gif -alpha off p.png
REM
REM use ffmpeg to make each frame into part of the video
for %%f in (*.png); do ffmpeg -loop_input -i "%%f" -r 15 -t %2 -qscale 5 "%%f.avi"
REM
REM join all together with windows copy command
copy /b *.png.avi temp.avi
REM
REM fix the broken video that copy makes and change the video codec to NTSC mpeg1
REM other values for framerate -r 25 (PAL)
ffmpeg -i temp.avi -r 29.97 -vcodec mpeg1video %1.mpg
REM for a divx/xvid avi use this instead of the previous.
REM ffmpeg -i temp.avi -vcodec libxvid %1.avi
REM tidy up
del *.png
del *.png.avi
del temp.avi

the command for this would be along the lines of: gif2mov test 1
It generates a lot of output: screenshot http://i.imgur.com/VuHfF.jpg
both the videos produced, played ok in windows so should be good for youtube

Thanks! It finally did work (GAP).Even though there's no warning anywhere,my laptop had to be shut "off" and then turn back "on" again for the program to appear.I found out the Mastervideoencoder thing (in GAP)which allows to convert the ani .GIF into .avi so it should be alright for Youtube.Only the speed was too slow but I did crank up the frame rate from the default 1 to 5 and it seems to be just right. Thanks again.
