Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
I'm a newbie so if this is the wrong section, forgive me.

I just downloaded GIMP 2.8 for Max Snow Leopard. I like a lot of the new features, particularly being able to use the one window feature.

I'm having some challenges with Text along path. I found it under the context menu okay. However, when I use it, only part of the words I'm trying to put on the selected path show up. I was using three words that amount to a total of 20 letters. The last half of the last word is getting cut off. I've tried several different things to no avail.

Anyone else had that issue?

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
I am having the same issue. I have a very long path (a circle in this case), a long string of letters, and when I use the Text along Path tool I only get part of my text. It is around 20 characters (but not exactly) and covers about 25% of my path (about a quarter circle).

I attached a picture of the output just so you have an idea of the problem.

I am using Gimp 2.8.0 on Mac OSX

I'v came across this problem too. When I have long text it seems to be trimed when I want to make it along path. Even when path is just simple line. Is there some solution?

It looks like there is a bug in some Gimp 2.8 compilations.

In a PCLOS and a Debian linux version(s) with Gimp 2.8 the text is truncated after 18 characters. This does not happen with a WinXp Gimp 2.8

A workaround until it is fixed is Ofnuts text along path plugin, which is working here in linux. Don't know about Mac python. Only drawback with this is you lose the ability to mix font size/types.

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
I was having a look around and can't find the text- along- path button from the text tool. I have got Ofnut's text to path in the right click menu on the paths dialogue though, and that works fine with my 2.8 and Vista PC. No way to change the colour though, or so it would appear?

Two *right click* locations either the relevent text layer or the text dialog as:

Then as Ofnuts says, maybe make into a selection & fill, paint, gradient, stroke the selection for an outline. All sorts of things.

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
Thanks for the info, guys. I've not had much call to use the text to path tools but am always curious to learn how all the different stuff works in Gimp.
I found the right click text commands and will have a play around with them later. Cheers.

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
All,

I posted the original problem back in May. I just updated to 2.8.2 today and still have the same issue. I read through the bug report, http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/at...id=227566, and at the bottom of the report a patch is discussed by a user named Massimo Valentini, which supposedly fixes the issue. How do a get an updated version with that Patch?

Thanks.

So what do I do in the mean time? I'm not a scripting whiz and I need to be able to create graphics with text around circles.

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
Thanks for the information. I downloaded your script. I have a MAC so I loaded it into two folders:

/Users/.../Library/GIMP/2.8/plugins
/Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/Resources/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins

which is where .py files go on a MAC

I also changed the file in both locations to be executable by doing: chmod *755 text-along-path-2.0.py (something you might consider adding to your user help)

Then I started Gimp and created a 640 x 400 image with a 200 x 200 circle. I tried putting the following text along a path: "POLLINATING THE WORLD WITH LOVE" and it still cuts off part way through the word WORLD.

What I am trying to do in 2.8 is create a logo with the word's "POLLINATING THE WORLD WITH LOVE" at the top and "THROUGH SIMPLE ACTS OF KINDNESS" at the bottom. See below.
.tiff  gimp-text-along-path-issue.tiff (Size: 30.19 KB / Downloads: 123)

While I was waiting for your reply to my previous message, I went ahead an uninstalled 2.8 and went back to 2.6 and was able to create the logo.

When I saw your reply I uninstalled 2.6, deleted all the gimp related folders, etc., and installed 2.8 and then installed the update. I then did what I described above and got the same results I was getting before even with your script installed. Not sure what do do now.

Thanks for your help.

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
Ofnuts text plugin works like this all-in-one-composite-screenshot

1. make the path
right-click in the paths dialog to bring up the context menu
at the bottom is the plugin entry, click on that to get the dialog.

2. enter the text and any parameter adjustments in the dialog

3. Ok that to get the path.

The only thing you dont get are the tweaks in font/size.

I appreciate your reply. However, Gimp 2.8.3 for MAC OS X doesn't have the options you're showing in the version above. See my attachment.

As you can see, the MAC version doesn't have the "Smooth Path" or "Tools" options. I looked everywhere I can think of to find them and can't. Any more suggestions?

RE: Gimp 2.8 Text along Path
As I indicated in my previous post, I have installed the script in both places indicated in the preferences as to where the plug-ins are supposed to go, or at least where I think they are supposed to go.

/Users/dad/Library/GIMP/2.8/plug-ins

The attachment shows the permissions for the file.

/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins

The attachment shows the permissions for the file.

When GIMP loads, I see the scripts being loaded and the text-along-path file is included. I'm not sure what else to do.

I appreciate your help.
