* when starting Gimp in a limited account in Windows, it freezes.
* when starting Gimp in an Administrator account, it works well.

I tried to set Gimp to "start as an Administrator" (in the properties of the program start icon) and will see if this helps (as I use the admin account only for Setup, and in the rest, just the limited account).

Your issue maybe easily solved, you need to install gimp by right-clicking on the install and clicking "Run as administrator" clicking yes on the prompt.
Since this looks like a permission block, one of your gimp folders isn't playing nice with the system, so in this case you'll need to reinstall with "run as administrator"
Thanks for the details! Smile

woa wow
If you mean physically pulling the actual power cord to turn it off, yes that is scary & dangerous to both your system and any files you hold dear on it. So no don't do that!
You could end up with corrupt files or worse your system won't boot up.

For freeze like that in the future, try to hold the power button for 5 seconds, it should shut down. That is a little more safe way to force a shutdown.
Plus there is a small chance you could get electricuted pulling the plug PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

I had a similar freeze like that where I ended a process & didn't know you could restart the process in task manager, I was visiting a video game site(popular one) & I played a video then my browser hanged, this was a long time ago. So I ended the task, system froze then I reformatted & reinstalled only to find out about restarting processes >< I felt dumb lol! We live we learn!

Also check your free space, how much do you have, and how much ram do you have? If your hard disk is near full, it could be heavily fragmented in which you need to first free up some space then defrag after checking it (defraggler is a good defrag program)

Goodluck!

Gimp should work with a standard user a account... Using that same user account, start a command prompt and enter "set". In the last few lines of the answer there are "USER" and "USERPROFILE" values. Does "USER" match your userid, and is "USERPROFILE" consistent with the userid and have you got write privileges on it?

I had the same problem,
Gimp2.8.8 Win7 ,
tried to del previous gimp dir
and to del cache:
C:\Users\"your_name"\AppData\local\fontconfig\cache

to install and use portable ver.
No way.

the I tried to exit from Firefox which was loaded with some 30 tabs or so,
and both Gimp version where loaded (one at a time)

is it Gimp Memory problem ?
Win7 memory handling issue ?

Operating system? Amount of RAM in the system? Amount of available RAM to Gimp? What kind of other applications with large RAM usage to you use (games/simulators, video editing)? Did you run a memory test lately?

Exclamation RE: Gimp 2.8 Startup Keeps Not Responding
*ATTENTION: all newcomers to this thread/forum:

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please first look at the whole thread & read through up to the latest posts to see if any of the suggestions already mentioned will fix your issue.

Then if not, post your
-Operating system (OS)
-gimp version, total memory/freespace
-total RAM/ free;avaliable RAM (to gimp).

(thankyou to those that have already, it wll better help to troubleshoot your specific Gimp)

Posting "I have similar problem..." with limited info won't help you much, we need that info to know what computer environment your Gimp is running in.

I'm having the same issue. I just got a new computer with Windows 8 and after initially installing Gimp 2.8.10 it was working fine. I downloaded 1 new font and it still worked ok. Today I tried opening Gimp for the first time in a few days and it keeps NOT RESPONDING when it gets to loading fonts. I tried re installing but no luck. I need help with this[/align]

RE: Gimp 2.8 Startup Keeps Not Responding
Hi All, I am having the exact problem you are talking about here. I get the "not responding" after about 15 seconds of the fonts loading. I haven't installed anything on my GIMP 2.8. I am running Win7, and I will try the fixes above if I can figure them out. Some of it is beyond my experience, but I'll try.

Thank you and I will repost when I have tried everything already given as a possible solution, thank you much

only 15 seconds? Try waiting at least 5 minutes on the first run, if your second run takes the same time, check below vvvvv

Gimp 2.8? Gimp version builds are important, the latest is 2.8.10. If you're having this problem on 2.8.6 or earlier, try upgrading to 2.8.10

Looking forward to your results.
