GIMP 2.8 Eyedropper Color Selection Tool Not Working? Upgraded App is Slow??
First let me say I have been a GIMP user for 6 years now and I am grateful for the effort and time devs have put into developing this product.

I installed GIMP 2.8 recently and noticed a couple issues after a brief first use. The first thing I noticed was the significant slow down in GIMP performance on my system (Win Vista 32/q6600 core 2 quad/2gb ram). I noticed this seems to be an issue others are experiencing with 2.8. I am following threads and trying suggested fixes for this issue although I haven't found a fix for this problem on my system yet .

One other issue I am experiencing is the eyedropper color selevtion tool is not working. Although when changing the color with the eyedropper tool the tool appears on the screen it will not change the color box when applied. I have seen another post in this forum regarding this issue but have not seen any possible fixes. Is there a fix or work around for this issue?
Thanks!
Mike

Under Windows I have never seen the color picker work outside of Gimp's own windows, even in 2.6... when I needed to pick colors on the screen, I use "File/Create/Screenshot" to pick colors in the loaded image.

The eyedropper does not work on a Gimp image either in 2.8. I have used it many times before in previous version. Have you not been able to reproduce this issue?

RE: GIMP 2.8 Eyedropper Color Selection Tool Not Working? Upgraded App is Slow??
Execuse me! Today I found out that the colorpicker exist in Gimp. Till now I used the eyedropper in color dialog to change fg color. And I foregot that there is something like colorpicker. But is the right that eyedropper doesn´t work(like in color to alpha dialog too).
Have a nice day! I haven´t... I´m insane from making animated brushes and RGB mode...

This feature isn't working for me either - I just installed on a new (temporary replacement) computer (WinXP, SP3) a few months ago. Have had this problem since installation.

As of Feb 2013, this problem appears to still exist (eyedropper not working).

Smile RE: GIMP 2.8 Eyedropper Color Selection Tool Not Working? Upgraded App is Slow??
Found solution / work-around here

Solution: Choose the paint brush, then hold down "Ctrl" and click to 'pick up' the color.

(The button still doesn't work for me, but "Ctrl" does.)

Even this last workaround doesn't work for me, I'm in OSX and I believe that theres a lot of work to do in this Gimp for OS...

Any way we find some way to work with it...

RE: GIMP 2.8 Eyedropper Color Selection Tool Not Working? Upgraded App is Slow??
I'm new here, and not a programmer at all (I'm a writer who designs my own book covers,) but have been frustrated by the lack of ability to use the color picker. I discovered that if I click the background color, then click the color picker button when that pane opens up, if I click the top bar of that same small window before choosing a color to match on my image, the color picker works. Somehow, the program is losing focus, and this regains it.

FYI I'm on Mac running OS X 10.9.3

I hope this comment helps others who are searching for a solution to the same problem.

There is an easy way. Just MOVE your MOUSE OVER the COLOR then HOLD in CTRL key and click the LEFT MOUSE button [DONE].

RE: GIMP 2.8 Eyedropper Color Selection Tool Not Working? Upgraded App is Slow??
@Tootalll: Considering Vista's support may officially end (around April of 2017), the fact that it was the iteration, win7 being the second version & win8/8.1 being the polished, better performing OS of all 3, and vista is clunky with 2GB RAM, in my experience...takes deep breath*...

That maybe reason for the slowness of it. vista also has random hang//freezes, not too stable, but stable enough, i don't know, perhaps with the right hardware it will run better.

RE: GIMP 2.8 Eyedropper Color Selection Tool Not Working? Upgraded App is Slow??
Gerlynx, I'm glad that solution works for you. But like AlexAv, using the CTRL button when mousing over the color doesn't always work for me (I am also on a Mac.) Unfortunately, my previously stated solution doesn't always work for me either. Confused
But between the two solutions, with enough clicking, I always seem to get it to pick up the color so I can move on (sometimes I have to try several times for it to work.)
I love GIMP even with its quirks.
Tam
