Gimp 2.8.2 Ubuntu crashes on Text
Thank you for taking a look at my question. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have Gimp 2.8.2 installed (Version: 2.8.2-1ubuntu0ppa2~precise). When I use the Text Tool in GImp, and try to change the Font, either via the left had side in the panel, or via the pop-up Gimp crashes. It crashes in 1 window mode, or not. It crashes in my account, and also in a guest account. It also crashes if I remove the scripts via the preferences menu. Here is what I get for an error message:

(gimp:14607): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Agency FB Bold Condensed 16'

(gimp:14607): Pango-WARNING **: font_face status is: <unknown error status>

(gimp:14607): Pango-WARNING **: scaled_font status is: out of memory

(script-fu:14614): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read(): error
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

This happens if I have text selected, or if there is no text written yet. No matter what font I try to select, it is an "offending" font.

Here are some other items:

ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ | grep gimp
matthaeus123-mrw-gimp-svn-oneiric.list
matthaeus123-mrw-gimp-svn-oneiric.list.distUpgrade
matthaeus123-mrw-gimp-svn-oneiric.list.save
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-precise.list
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-precise.list.save
shnatsel-gimp-paint-studio-oneiric.list
shnatsel-gimp-paint-studio-oneiric.list.distUpgrade
shnatsel-gimp-paint-studio-oneiric.list.save

ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED.

Thank you.

RE: Gimp 2.8.2 Ubuntu crashes on Text
Unfortunately I did not find an "easy" solution to the issue. I was able to resolve it however, which was necessary as I use GIMP quite a bit for work that I do. I backed up my entire home directory (I am the only user on my computer) and I installed Kubuntu 12.10. I suppose a clean install of 12.04 may work as well. After the complete install, and then upgrade. I then, and only then restored my home directory, then reinstalled the programs I wanted.

I hope this helps.

Before other people go to all that trouble, they could try renaming the .gimp-2.8 folder (in the home directory) to .backup-gimp-2.8. Then try restarting gimp again. Gimp should then recreate the .gimp-2.8 directory. That worked for me. I had to redo my custom gimp settings but that was a lot easier than re-installing the operating system.

Sorry for my english Wink

FOR LINUX USER ONLY
i think this is a user access problem to the fonts

try this:
1 - start the Gimp in Terminal window: gimp

2 - wait to crash of gimp (by scrolling up or down the font selector)

3 - in Terminal window you can see now the error message like this : Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'TheRoots 16' <--- your bad Font

4 - check the accessrights for your fonts in your home hidden (Ctrl+H) folder .gimp2-8

4a - open Terminal window in .gimp2-8 folder and use this command: chmod -R 655 fonts

5 - go in Terminal window to /usr/share (cd /usr/share)

6 - use this command: sudo chmod -R 655 fonts
