gimp 2.8.10 jpegs can't be read
Recently upgraded Ubuntu to 14.04 and Gimp to 2.8.10. I have used Gimp for photo editing for some time with no previous problems. Now when I edit and export to jpeg or even overwrite the original jpeg the file is not able to be read on some other systems. eg I can read the jpegs straight from the camera or created with earlier version of Gimp on the smart TV or the photo print facility but NOT after they have been edited in Gimp 2.8.10. The edited files can be read on my laptop in Image Viewer or Shotwell or my wife's Win 8. I can take an edited file, make a small change and re-save using Shotwell and the jpeg is readable, viewable. Can't imagine going thru my photos editing in Gimp 2.8.10, exporting and then having to re-open, make an adjustment and re-save thru Shotwell in order to get my photos printed. Very frustrating as I have done quite a bit of editing and I'd like to see some 8x10s soon.

thanks in advance

When you save the JPEG, untick the "Progressive JPEG" box in the advanced options. That may clear it, but implies that your software has not been updated since the 80s because this is a very old option of the JPG standard (which is very useful for JPG on websites).

Not certain about the line regarding software from the 80s (given 2.8.10) but unticking the Progressive box in the advanced options has done the trick. Off to the printer...

mucho gracias

The 80s software is running in your TV (or whatever can't handle properly progressive JPEGs) (ie the "smart TV" and the "photoprint facility").

But isn't the point of progressive JPEGs now redundant ? (to provide an appallingly low quality placeholder because dial-up internet was so slow)

From digital photography review

Don't use progressive JPEG. It was designed to compensate for really slow dial up connections. And it can't be read by some devices now.

One opinion by one person...

In practice, progressive JPEG is part of the JPEG format (since at least 1998...) so you cannot state that you support JPEG without supporting it. If you were sold a USB external disk that only works with USB 1.1 (12Mb/s, standard published in 1996) and not USB2 (480 Mbit/s, published in 2000) you would return it immediately...
