Gimp 2.6: rotate canvas?
Hello friends,

With all the interface options, I'm having trouble finding one I think was available in previous versions: rotating the canvas.

Is it in the menu somewhere? Is there a shortcut?

Thank you, I'm already very impressed (and somewhat overwhelmed) by all the features I've seen so far in Gimp.

To rotate the canvas by 90° or 180°, see "Image/Transform"

Thanks, but is there a way to rotate it in smaller increments or more intuitively, with the mouse for instance?

Like in Photoshop:

That's rotating a layer... For this there is the 'Rotate' tool (Rotate). If you want to rotate several layers, just chain/link them in the Layers list dialog

That's one step closer, thanks again.

I guess the image is a little misleading, but the grey part is Photoshop's background, not another layer.

Simply put, all I'm really looking for is a way to temporarily rotate the view, as if I were tilting a sheet of paper to draw something at an angle.

Can't be done in Gimp. But if you tell us why you want to do that, we may come up with alternative techniques (such as using a "path" as an arbitrary snap-on "guide")

Why I want to draw certain things at an angle?

It's just easier. Say I'm drawing a character who's stretching his/her arm out diagonally. It's easier for me to tilt the page (or canvas) and draw the arm vertically than to try to maintain proportions while drawing diagonal lines.

It's just a convenience tool, but an effective one.

A rotating canvas is a VERY cool tool to have. When animations were done by hand they used a special drafting table that was round. It turned like a rail road turntable.

They could use a very normal hand / wrist stroke. Move your hand back and forth and you'll see the exact stroke that is natural for you.

By simply rotating the drawing they could use this stroke all day long. It was an excellent way to get repeatable and accurate results.

The programs Painter and Krita have this feature. I would very much like to see this added to Gimp.

Thanks for all your fine work.
