Genuine Fractals type plug-in for GIMP?
Hi all,

Is there a Genuine Fractals type of plug-in for GIMP.

I'm looking for something that interpolates an image to a larger size better than just normal interpolation within the application.

Thanks,

digi

Well, the standard Sinc/Lanczos isn't so bad actually. I did some research and didn't come out with anything. Another OpenSource software called Digikam has a special algorithm for upscaling that is rather adequate too, but I although it's open source, I couldn't locate a plug-in using it. Note that these are really meant for photo-type images.

If you want to upscale simple graphics such as logos there is a much better method using paths that gives perfect results and unlimited scale factors.

I tried Liquid Rescale the night I posted this question, downloaded from its own site at this link...
http://liquidrescale...com/en:examples

I tried it every which way with every combination of settings and it created bizarre, distorted images.

I also tried "Upsize for GIMP" and the installer gave an error message.

I guess there's nothing like Photoshop and Genuine Fractals.

I already know how to use the paths scaling feature. As I said, I'm looking for something like Genuine Fractals.

Thanks.

Ask on the Registry. The authors are likely to help.

I tried that... after having to register separately to be able to post a question on the registry forum and posting my question about the error message, it said my question would be posted pending approval... it never showed up and I never got a response. I think they only want to post positive comments.

In spite of the settings that I have set up on this forum, I never get email notices about responses, so if I can't even see my question on the registry forum, there won't be any responses to check for... right?

You asked you question by adding a comment to the script page? I never noticed these were moderated?

ofnuts,

Where else would I post a question about problems with this plug-in? It appeared that other comments had been responded to there, yet my comment about the installer error was never posted or responded to.

Here is a link to the page where I posted my question about the installer error message... my post still doesn't show, but there are other questions and responses there...
http://registry.gimp.org/node/19582

If there is a proper place to post this problem inquiry, please provide a link to the correct page.

Thanks,

digi

I have packages on the registry, and the comments aren't moderated AFAiK. Retry the post, maybe there was a glitch. Or try to reach them through this page: https://www.ohloh.net/p/upsize_GIMP_plugin

RE: Genuine Fractals type plug-in for GIMP?
Reluctant to post this since it is not a gimp plugin but SmillaEnlarger is free and worth a try. It is a stand-alone windows app but it does work using WINE & Linux.

homepage
http://sourceforge.net/projects/imageenlarger/
downloads
http://sourceforge.net/projects/imageenl...e%200.9.0/

Its been around awhile, so apologies if you already know about it.

In the past I have used a commercial resizer 'PhotoZoom' and it is no better or worse than that for sensible scaling.

A quick comparison http://i.imgur.com/u6F6N.jpg - slightly better result than gimp & cubic.

of course it still will not be any good for the peeps who want to scale a 64x64 pix icon up to room size.

edit:

I use PCLOS 2011 at the moment, I've had SmillaEnlarger (windows) in my WINE directory for some time, migrated it from my previous linux. Just noticed that there is a linux compiled version (0.9) in the PCLOS repo, so no need for the win version. A look around and there seem to be debian packages as well, so it is worth checking whatever disto you use.

Hi Rich,

Sorry I haven't replied until now... I don't receive email alerts from the forum about replies in spite of my preference settings.

I will give this one a try... I didn't know about it before... thanks.

I'll write back after I do some sensible trials using it.

Thanks so much,

digi

RE: Genuine Fractals type plug-in for GIMP?
I don't know if you'll see this, but I did stumble on a free program that does fractal interpolation. It's kinda slow, and a bit buggy, but at least it works (just try again if you hit a bug). I discovered it when I was looking for a GIMP plugin to do spline-based downsampling. It's not a GIMP plugin, unfortunately.

The software is from Meesoft, and is called Image Analyzer. It doesn't come with the fractal interpolation option, but they do offer it as a plugin. The entire thing is Windows freeware.

I really wish GIMP could handle this, as I use it as my primary image editor. As an image editor, Image Analyzer is really lacking. But until someone will write a plugin for this sort of thing, it's really the only free solution.

Though I will be asking the author to consider porting the scaling portions of the program to GIMP plugins.
