gegl tool

gegl tool
I am puzzled as to what this GEGL library is for it seems to incorporate things like gausian filters but also brightness and contrast.These seem to do the same as in filter or under color.
Are these intended as improved functions or are they there to complement and to add extra functions

I have had a go with gegl I think its great I used your answer in

I think the really good thing about it for someone new like me is that with the gausian blur and unsharp mask you have a preview by ticking this on and off you can see how your working image is going to change rather than that small picture you get in filters.
In the attached picture the background is showing gausian blur 10 pixels but by clicking the preview you see you original.
It works the same for the unsharp mask
