Filter for rounding edges?
Hi all,

Is there a stock filter or one that can be added to GIMP that sort of rounds the edges of sharp parts of an image?

I'm looking for a filter or effect that can round the sharp edges of a bitmap image of a font, to give it that 'Xerox Machine' effect where a sharp font looses it's sharp corners and gets a rounded effect from being copied over and over.

I already tried the 'Gaussian Blur' filter, but that just creates soft edges and not the rounded corners that I'm looking for. The effect that I'm looking for is not fuzzy or blurred, but is more of a 'rounded corners' effect... it can be seen in the attached image that is below.

Thanks!

RE: Filter for rounding edges?
Well maybe you are most of the way there.
I would say it is the old trick of gaussian blur then tweak the colour levels, a bit like this

Can't match the font. What is it?

RE: Filter for rounding edges?
Yup, that's it!

Thanks rich.

Now I remember that trick from the old 'create beveled edges' procedure for rounding the edges of text... I forgot about that.

I can see that, to do your trick with levels I need to have my white text on a black background, and not on a separate transparent layer for that to work, and then just work with the Levels settings a little, then do a little Gaussian blurring after the Levels, because doing levels sharpens the text edges again.

With Levels and Gaussian Blur, it gives me nearly a perfect knock-off of my sample taken from a video of an old film.

Thanks a lot... you rock!

PS: Wow, and thanks for doing that nice custom tutorial... that was nice!

RE: Filter for rounding edges?
There is also Filters/Artistic/Photocopy that seems to do the same thing when applied to text...

RE: Filter for rounding edges?
The technique that Rich posted works great... below is a sample image that shows the comparison of the original movie title text image compared to the new one created with the Levels and Gaussian Blur effect, compared with the original Albertus font before any manipulation.

Thanks to all for your input here.
